Anger tore through me like wildfire, burning up all the resentment I’d tried to bury.
My rage was like an overfilled balloon—one little poke from his shamelessness and I just exploded. There was no stopping it.
“Remy, you’re unbelievable! How could you do this to me? I’ve loved you for six years. I gave you everything—did everything I was supposed to and plenty I shouldn’t have, too. You’re the one who cheated, you’re the one who tore our marriage apart. This is all on you. I just want out. Why can’t you let me go?”
My hands were shaking as I swept everything off the table—food, plates, silverware crashed to the floor. I hurled a plate across the room. It smashed against the wall, sending red bean soup dripping down, every little bean a piece of my heart that I’d given to him, to this home.
He just looked at me, ice cold, and said, “I told you, in six months Julia will be gone. Once she’s out of the picture, my whole life is yours. Why can’t you wait just a little longer? Six months, Avery. It’ll go by in a flash. Or quit your job, go travel the world, come back when it’s all over. I’ll handle the wedding, the honeymoon, everything—just the way you want.”
“Remy, are you kidding me right now? I want a divorce! I want out! You’re a total fraud—a two-faced, heartless hypocrite. You have no soul. I can’t stand you. Let me spell it out: I don’t love you anymore. I’m done, Remy. I want a divorce!”
I was losing it, barely holding myself together.
My anger was so overwhelming, I didn’t even notice when a shard of broken plate sliced into my big toe. Blood started pooling on the floor, bright and shocking.
Remy just stood there, silent, his eyes colder than ever.
I stalked around the room, leaving bloody footprints behind me.
