Remy tapped away on his phone for a second, and then my own phone buzzed with a new message. The bank was letting me know he’d just transferred fifty million into my account, with a note that said “voluntary gift, never to be taken back.”

My heart went cold. My face felt even colder.

After six years together, he could betray me like this and not even think about how I felt. It was like my pain meant nothing to him. The only thing he knew how to do was throw money at the situation, as if that could somehow fix everything.

Did he really see me as someone so cheap?

Remy seemed to completely misread my reaction, probably thinking I was upset because it wasn’t enough. Before I could say anything, he was already on the phone with Mike, telling him to wire half a billion from the company account into mine right away and to mark it as a gift.

Half a billion. That was huge. Moving that kind of money out of the company would definitely mess with their cash flow.

Remy had to know how reckless that was. He wasn’t stupid. But he did it anyway, just to keep me quiet and to make sure I wouldn’t stand in the way while he and Julia carried on.

“Is this enough?” Remy asked, his voice soft, almost pleading. “I can explain about last night. Julia knows she doesn’t have much time left. She’s always been on the edge, and in this world, the only people she cares about are me and Cindy. That kiss—it was just my way of encouraging her to hang on, nothing more. I would never give her my body, not now, not ever. And the money I spent on her? It’s not even a tenth of what I’ve given you. Babe, when I say I love you, I mean it. Julia was out of my life five years ago. You and I—we’re meant to be together for life.”
