It was late autumn. The sun outside looked warm and inviting, but the wind was so cold it cut right through me.
The second I stepped outside, I shivered. Without thinking, I leaned into Elliot, searching for a bit of warmth in his arms.
Elliot’s eyes darkened. He held me tighter and walked a little faster.
There was a car waiting in the driveway, and two more parked out on the street. All of them were probably here because of Elliot.
Ryan stood by the car, looking tense and impatient. As soon as he saw us, he rushed over and opened the door. Elliot picked me up and slid into the back seat with me in his arms.
“Take us to Central Hospital. Hurry,” Elliot said, his voice clipped.
“Yes, sir,” Ryan answered.
The cars sped through the city, the buildings on either side blurring past.
“How did this happen?” Elliot asked, his voice low and serious.
I’d just barely survived. My feelings were raw and all over the place, and I needed someone to talk to—someone who’d actually listen. Elliot was sharp. Even if I didn’t say anything, he’d probably figure out most of it.
“It was my husband. Remy,” I said softly.
The moment his name left my lips, something cold and dangerous flashed in Elliot’s eyes. He looked like he wanted to murder someone.
The car pulled up outside the ER. Elliot scooped me up again and stormed into the hospital, not stopping until he found a doctor’s office. His voice was icy. “Full checkup. Now.”
By chance, the doctor on duty was Dr. Lee—someone I’d met once before.
Dr. Lee checked me over from head to toe while Elliot waited just outside the curtain, restless.
Maybe it was the hospital, or just knowing I was finally safe, but exhaustion hit me all at once. My eyes felt so heavy. I could barely keep them open.
Dr. Lee finished the exam and stepped out to talk with Elliot. They kept their voices low, but I caught bits and pieces.
