Kailynn was on a roll—the more she talked, the crazier her ideas got.

Where were my socks when I needed them? Someone needed to stuff one in her mouth, fast.

“I knew it!” she blurted out. “There’s no way my best friend—someone as incredible as you—would waste her whole life with a useless jerk. Turns out, it was just bad timing! And oh my god, he’s so hot. Way hotter than any of my exes. Seriously, I’m dying of jealousy over here!”

Kailynn was so giddy she flopped back on my hospital bed, laughing and waving her arms like a maniac.

I pressed my bleeding hand over her mouth, shooting Elliot an awkward, apologetic glance, wishing I could melt into the floor. How could I possibly explain this mess?

Elliot just looked as calm and handsome as ever, his eyes darkening, warm and deep like melted chocolate—impossible to look away from.

Remy caught the whole silent exchange, his jaw twitching, face stormy. He walked out and came back a minute later with the doctor.

Of course, it was Dr. Lee again. That man was everywhere these days.

Dr. Lee glanced briefly at Elliot, who looked like he owned the hospital, then opened my file. He retold my admission story with extra drama, then frowned hard when he saw my bleeding hand. “Why is this bleeding again? Are you trying to ruin your wrist? A scar is nothing. If you damage the tendons, it could mess up your work and your life.”

With every word from Dr. Lee, Remy’s face got darker and darker.

Kailynn just listened, getting more and more upset until she was practically in tears.

Meanwhile, Remy’s phone kept ringing nonstop. He glanced at it, shoved it back in his pocket, and ignored it, focusing on me instead. He kept reaching out to check my hand, but every time, Kailynn would swat him away.

Finally, Kailynn snapped. “Either turn your phone off or get out and answer it somewhere else! You’re driving me nuts!”

Remy’s jaw clenched and he finally left to take the call.

Right then, Elliot’s phone started ringing too. He answered, said a few quick words, then made another call.
