From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 88

Jeffery didn’t even get to finish his sentence before someone shouted, “The building’s coming down! Everyone, stay calm and get out—now!”

With a loud crack, all the lights snapped off. The only thing left was a sliver of light by the door, barely enough to see.

Panic exploded. Screams echoed everywhere, raw and terrified. We were just teenagers, not even old enough to know how to handle something like this. Life and death felt way too close—no one could keep it together.

In less than a second, everyone surged for the exit.

Kailynn, Jeffery, and I got separated in the chaos. At that point, no one was thinking about anyone else. It was pitch black. I couldn’t see a thing.

And then, suddenly, I was falling. The world spun beneath me.

The brand new three-story building had collapsed.

There was rubble everywhere, broken walls and beams, dust thick in the air. Electric wires fizzed and sparked with blue light, making everything feel even more unreal. The sounds around me were just pain and fear—crying, shouting, people calling out for help.

I’d been near the back, stuck behind everyone else trying to get out. The sound of the floor cracking was enough to freeze my blood.

Then, with a crash, the floor gave way. I flailed, grabbing for anything, desperate not to fall.

A strong hand grabbed mine, steady and warm. A calm voice said, “Don’t be scared. I’m here.”

A boy from my class pulled me into his arms, holding me tight as we fell together.

His head was hit by something heavy. Blood poured down his face.

It was so dark I couldn’t see him. All I could feel was his breathing, getting weaker and weaker.

We ended up squished together in a tiny pocket of space, barely able to move.

I’d never faced something like this before. I was terrified. I started patting his face, just like people do in movies, trying to keep him awake.

He tried to reassure me, his voice low and rough. “It’s okay. Someone’s going to find us.”

Then his head dropped onto my shoulder. He didn’t move again.
