Denton’s three “Tyler said” made Caroline confused at first. But she quickly pieced together what happened. She grinned and accepted the meal from him. “Okay, tell Tyler thanks for me.”

At the same time, Caroline realized why Jet had just called out “Silver.”

The little silver bird was perched on Denton’s shoulder. It was tiny, with a bright red beak. It blinked curiously at the room.

Jet looked up at the bird lovingly.

For a split second, it seemed like the bird’s eyes flicked down toward Jet.

Caroline felt Jet stiffen in her arms.

“Wait a sec.”

As Denton was about to leave, Caroline called him back.

She pretended to be heading back to her room but actually grabbed a few chili peppers and a bag of imported spicy snacks from the storage space.

The snacks were from Turela and super spicy. Before the apocalypse, people who liked spicy food would snack on these while watching TV shows.

“This is a thank–you gift for you.”

Caroline handed Denton the chili peppers and snacks.

Denton’s eyes lit up instantly. “You’re the best! How did you know Tyler and I love spicy stuff?”

Caroline figured it out because she remembered seeing them eat almost nothing without spice that day. When they were done, there was still some meat left, but every single chili pepper was gone.

After saying goodbye to Denton, Caroline looked at the steaming roasted chicken in her hands and swallowed. Denton really knew his way around the kitchen–pre–apocalypse, he could’ve been a top chef.

Combined with a hearty serving of mashed potatoes and cucumber she grabbed from the storage space, Caroline sat at the table and dug in heartily.

Halfway through her meal, she suddenly realized something–Jet hadn’t said a single word the whole time.

She spun around to see Jet sitting dumbfounded on the ground, looking exactly the same as when she’d let him down.

He was staring blankly toward the door.

Caroline walked over and gently poked his head. “What’s wrong?”

Only then did Jet’s eyeballs move. “Silver … She looked at me!”

Caroline was at a loss for words.

She had seen it too. The little silver bird definitely glanced at Jet.

But it was just one look, probably shorter than the time she spent looking at the screen inside the room.

And yet, that was all it took to make Jet stunned.

Ignoring Jet’s love–struck brain, Caroline spread its wings and checked carefully.

Sure enough, all the wounds had healed.

Not a single scar left, and the feathers had grown back. Maybe not fully, but at least it didn’t look bald anymore.

Caroline finally relaxed. Yep, he is totally fine.

Still ignoring the dazed Jet, she decided to head back to the storage space, check out this week’s random animals, and organize today’s haul.

She figured she’d wait a bit for upgrading the storage space.

After all, with the mutant cockroach bodies, the mutant python horns, and a bunch of other random stuff, there was quite a lot.

She knew this upgrade would probably change the storage space a lot.

So she preferred to do it when she had free time.

If the storage space were upgraded and shut off access temporarily, she’d be totally screwed.
