Natalie leaned in to adjust an earring, her voice dropping. “Guys, right? They act all cool and distant, but once they’re in love, they’re like Velcro. Sometimes I’m like, ‘Dude, give me some breathing room.””

“For real? How’d you two hook up?” Freya asked.

Natalie’s cheeks went even pinker. “He kept coming into the store, saying he was buying stuff for someone. Always asked me to try it on to ‘see how it looked.’ Next thing I know, he’s saying he’s into me…” Her voice trailed off into a shy mumble.

“What’d he pick up?” Freya asked.

“You know, earrings, necklaces, the usual. He’s basically bought every basic piece we’ve got.”

Freya nodded. “All women’s stuff, huh? Sure he wasn’t shopping for another girl?”

Natalie’s hand froze mid-adjustment, and the earring’s hook yanked Freya’s earlobe. “Ouch—”

Freya touched her ear. Blood.

“Oh my gosh, Mrs. Grant, I’m so sorry!” Natalie scrambled for a tissue, dabbing at the spot. “I didn’t mean to

“What the hell’s your deal?!” a voice shouted.

A blur of motion shoved Natalie aside, sending her crashing into a display case with a loud thud.

Freya barely registered it before she felt warm breath on her neck and a gentle touch on her earlobe.

“You okay?” Ryan asked.

She blinked, focusing on Ryan’s clenched jaw. “Why’re you tailing me?”

He nodded at her ear. “Thought you were here for a show. Didn’t know it’d cost you a piece of your ear.”

Freya grabbed some tissues from her bag, wiping the blood. The white paper soaked up a surprising amount of red.

“Nah,” Ryan snapped, his voice cold as ice. “I’m taking her to the hospital.”

He tugged Freya’s arm toward the door. “Let’s go. You don’t want that getting infected.”

In the car, Freya barely felt the seat under her. Ryan was driving like he was in a Fast and Furious movie.

“Damn, Ryan,” she said. “If the lawyer thing tanks, you could totally race cars.”

He shot her a look. “Still cracking jokes? Guess you’re not hurt that bad.”

“It’s not a big deal. I’ll clean it at home, slap on some ointment. No hospital needed.”

Ryan snorted. “What, you want one earlobe longer than the other? Gonna end up looking like a lopsided elf?”

Freya laughed. “Then I’ll just yank the other one to match.”

They went to the hospital anyway. The doc cleaned the wound, put on some antiseptic, and handed her a bottle of medicated drops with instructions to keep it clean.

Ryan stood off to the side, arms crossed, looking like he was ready to deck someone.

As they were leaving, he spoke up. “She need a tetanus shot or anything?”

The doctor shook his head. “Nope, the earring’s gold, no rust. She’s good.”

“What about tetanus in the air?” Ryan pressed. “Maybe just give her a shot to be safe.”
