Lily showed up like she was dodging the CIA. Baseball cap, sunglasses, mask-her hair was stuffed under the hat, not a hint of her face showing.
Once inside the booth, she was still twitchy. “Why do I feel like two women out there are staring holes through me?”
Freya slid her a cup of tea. “Relax, they’re not paparazzi.”
“How do you know?”
“‘Cause they’re tailing me.”
Lily ripped off her disguise, tossing it aside, and dropped into a chair, chugging the coffee like it was her lifeline. “God, I’m so over this. Followed day and night. I’m not even dating anyone-what’s their problem?”
Freya smirked. “You’re too hot right now, that’s what. Paparazzi are all over you. One good pic, and you’re trending on X.”
Lily groaned, slumping back. “If I’d known being famous was this much of a hassle, I’d have stayed a nobody. I’m on edge all the time.”
“You’ve got no dirt for them to dig up. What’s the big deal?”
The words hung heavy, and both of them felt the sting. That night seven years ago was their shared secret, a nightmare they couldn’t outrun.
Lily grabbed Freya’s hand. “Freya, I owe you everything for these past years.”
Freya gave a small laugh. “For what, exactly?”
“If you and Professor Cooper hadn’t shown up that night, I… I don’t think I’d be here.”
Lily had always been a head-turner, the kind of bold, in-your-face beauty that stopped people in their tracks.
Freya’s charm was softer, more elegant, like a quiet melody. Both were stunning, but Lily’s vibe screamed “notice me,” especially to guys.
That was where it all went wrong. Back in college, Lily was the campus queen, too famous for her own good.
She lived for the arts-singing at school events, stealing the spotlight every time.
By senior year, she was practically a local legend, with talent scouts shoving business cards at her, begging to make her a star.
Her life should’ve been all glitz and glamour. But then came the senior gala.
Lily, still in her dance outfit-a tank top and short skirt-walked past a construction site near campus.

Next thing she knew, someone grabbed her, covered her mouth, and dragged her to a hotel.
The hotel clerk sensed trouble and called the cops.
The police tried their advisor, but he was out of town, so he called his friend Thomas to step in.
