Chapter 89

Fireworks filled the sky one after another, nearly lighting up all of the sky above the Peldra River.

Freya watched, a little lost in thought.

She didn’t know how long it had been since she quietly enjoyed a fireworks show like this.

The last time was back in college, when Liam took her to Disney.

They waited over four hours just for that nighttime fireworks show.

Freya couldn’t keep her eyes open from exhaustion, so Liam took off his jacket and draped it over her. “Lean against me and get some rest. I’ll wake you when the fireworks begin.”

But that time, she hardly saw any of the fireworks because as soon as the fireworks started, Liam began kissing her.

By the time the kiss ended, the fireworks show was over.

Liam said, “Next time, I’ll have someone set off a private fireworks display just for you, so you can see as much as you want.” Freya shook her head. “No need. Setting off fireworks just for me is such a waste! And it’s bad for the environment.”

Liam thought, ‘That’s how women are–saying the opposite of what they truly feel!

Sure, it wasn’t great for the environment–but really, who didn’t dream of the day someone they loved would set off fireworks just for them?

It was not about birthdays or holidays—just a simple wish to make her smile.

“What are you thinking about?” Ryan asked.

Freya felt dazed, as if caught between dream and reality. She shook her head and said, “It’s nothing.”

Ryan asked, “Were you remembering the past? Did Liam ever take you to see fireworks?”

Freya replied, “It was so long ago. I don’t remember.”

As they spoke, warmth spread across her shoulders.

Ryan had already, at some point, taken off his own coat and draped it over her.

After all, they were a man and a woman. The gesture felt too intimate, and instinctively, Freya went to remove it and hand it

back.

But Ryan said, “The night air is chilly. If you catch a cold, who’s going to walk my dogs?”

Freya said helplessly, “Mr. Reed, with the way you talk, it’s no wonder no one’s been willing to be with you. Only Sophia can handle you.”

“Why do you keep bringing up Sophia? Are you that close with her?” he said.

Freya studied him with confusion. “Don’t you know why I mention her?”

He organized a job fair just for her, a job set up just to fill a specific spot.
