Cedric’s brows twitched ever so slightly, a shadow of a smile playing at his lips. “Girlfriend?”
“Yeah,” Soren nodded, his tone certain. “My girlfriend.”
Cedric glanced up, amusement flickering in his eyes. “When you were still back home, you told Grandma you’d already met someone. Was it her?”
Soren nodded again, a bright, almost blinding happiness on his face. “It’s always been her.”
Cedric exhaled a slow stream of smoke, the smile deepening at the corners of his eyes. “Well, why not bring her around sometime? We’ll have dinner together.”
“Of course, no problem.”
The two fell quiet for a moment. Cedric tapped the ash from his cigarette, sparks fizzling out as they hit the snow.
He broke the silence. “You planning to stay here for a few more months? Not going back? I stopped by the stables the other day—those are some fine horses you’ve got. Seems a shame to just leave them sitting there.”
“If you like them, take them. I won’t charge you a dime. Just look after them for me, that’s all I ask.”
Soren paused, then added, “And keep an eye on the family for me. How’s Grandma doing these days?”
“She’s well. She does mention you from time to time, though.”
Soren nodded thoughtfully. “I’ll video call her soon.”
Cedric’s gaze lifted, darker and more serious. “Not going to ask about Dad?”
“Hm?”
Soren hesitated for half a second, then slipped seamlessly into an easy tone. “Dad’s always been in decent health, hasn’t he? Aside from the occasional high blood pressure. Try not to argue with him—he’s getting on, and it’s not easy for him.”
“Got it.”
Cedric nodded. “It’s getting late. I’m beat. I’ll head back—we’ll talk later.”
“Drive safe.”
Soren watched the taillights fade into the night, and the warmth in his eyes slowly ebbed away.
...
“Mr. Royce, where to now?” Casper asked, hands steady on the steering wheel.
“Take a drive around the block, then circle back to the apartment.”
In the back seat, Cedric pulled out his phone, tapped on Nadia’s profile picture, and sent a message: [Come down.]
