Over the past few days, whenever Soren came looking for Lumina, Nadia would seize the chance while she was out to flirt with him behind her back.
Soren shoved her away, a cold smirk playing on his lips. “Did Cedric teach you to be this shameless?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Nadia replied, blinking innocently as her hand wandered to his thigh.
Soren pointed a warning finger at her face, his handsome features turning icy. “Don’t push me, Nadia, or you’ll regret it.”
She just laughed, her voice sweet and mocking. “Oh, but I’d welcome it, big brother. You never mean what you say.”
Just then, Lumina stepped out of her room and caught sight of Soren heading into the bathroom. She called out to him, but he didn’t look back, simply closing the door behind him.
Nadia lounged against the hallway wall, a satisfied curve on her red lips.
That afternoon, Soren drove Lumina to work. His mood was unmistakably sour the entire ride. Just as Lumina was about to get out of the car, Soren finally spoke.
“You’re moving out at the end of the month. I’ll find you a new place.”
Soren rarely used that kind of commanding tone with her. Lumina hesitated, turning back to look at him. “What’s going on?”
“Your roommate is trouble.”
“Nadia? She just likes to have fun, that’s all. She’s harmless.”
“You’re too trusting, Lumina.” Soren tapped his fingers against the steering wheel, his gaze steely. “Did it ever occur to you she might be getting close to you on purpose?”
“On purpose?” Lumina let out a soft laugh. “She’s just a college student. What kind of scheme could she possibly have? I think you’re just overworked lately.”
She didn’t take Soren’s warning too seriously, but on the way into work, she found herself replaying her first encounters with Nadia. In hindsight, it was all a string of odd coincidences—Nadia always seemed to show up exactly when Lumina needed help.
Lost in thought, Lumina was snapped back to reality by Barbara’s sharp voice echoing through the break room. “Daydreaming on the clock again, kid? Are you planning to pay the water bill yourself?”
Lumina flushed, quickly shutting off the tap.
After work, a notification popped up on her phone—a reminder from Dr. Merton about her prenatal appointment. She called the clinic and scheduled a checkup for eight that evening.
When the shop closed, Lumina caught a cab to the clinic by herself.
