Chapter 142
My eyes widened upon reading that note. I looked at the note again and again and then back at her, wondering if this was just my imagination.
But she kept looking at me hopefully.
Was she stating the truth? Plus why would she try to help me when she had resented me all these days?
I narrowed my eyes at her and she mouthed. “Dungeons.”
Dungeons?
What was that supposed to mean?
I looked at her then to the note in my hand and then the pathways that led outside. Was she stating the truth?
Or was this another trap that she was weaving?
I held onto the note, hope brimming in my eyes. If I were to connect the dots, her note meant Killian was right here in the dungeons.
That meant I did not have to go search for him anywhere. That meant he was still within reach and maybe I could free him from the dungeons.
I had been feeling so hurt and miserable but that note gave me hope. I looked back at Maelyn again, tears stinging the back of my eyes.
If she were playing with me about this, I was going to skin both her and Martin alive. But she kept looking at one of the exits and signalling me to go down from there.
But this place was filled with people. How the hell was I going to leave unnoticed? And even if I did, I had no idea how big the dungeons were and where exactly to find Killian,
While I debated about these scenarios, Martin continued to talk down to King Beric. More and more people came forward to support him, demanding the King be executed or imprisoned.
My gaze flicked to King Accidus who was still lying on the bed. Nina was busy trying to combine liquids from different vials and that is when I noticed King Accidus‘ pale eyes notice me.
It seemed as if he was looking at me, not directing a blank stare, but more like a cry for help. I narrowed my eyes to see his pale hands shivering and his mouth trying to move.
It must be taking him a lot of energy to just move his finger yet I could see that in his eyes- a plea for help. My legs moved on their own accord and I rushed towards him.
King Aecidus‘ pale hand was trembling but his index finger twitched and he looked from Nina to me several
times.
Nina had her back turned to me and was busy mixing whatever it was so she didn’t realize at first that I had creeped up behind her.
But then she turned around and her gaze grew murderous upon seeing me.
“What are you doing ehre?” She hissed like an angry serpent but not before I had seen the small vials behind her on the table,
“Wait, that is Wilderroot stem but where is powdered ash. Giving the stem raw without mixing it with ash powder can be lethal to a patient.”
I repeated the exact words she had said to me the last time I had been called to heal the King. And I had seen that black spidery hand that disappeared without a trace when I tried to grab it.
Nina looked confused for a second but quickly tried to cover it up and push me away.
“You are standing in my way, get lost you bitch.”
But I grabbed the hand she had used to push me away and glared at her.
“You also hated to use curse words yet here you are, cursing left and right.”
I looked at her, really looked at her and asked.
“Who are you?”
She gritted her teeth and I thought I heard something guttural escape her mouth. But then she blinked and turned around to forcefully open the King’s mouth.
However, I yanked her hand away and loudly declared.
“She is trying to kill the King with this stem. Even a child knows this stem is poisonous if given to an ailing patient without ashpowder mixed into it.”
Maelyn was the one to hear me and she immediately came rushing towards me and nodded affirmatively.
“Yes, she is telling the truth.”
King Beric freed himself of the guards holding him down and came to stand beside his daughter while Martin and his followers took a moment to realize just what had happened.
Meanwhile, a few more group of people entered the room and it got all chaotic.
But Maelyn was quick to pull me aside and whisper.
“I had asked for reinforcement to arrive if nobody heard from us in an hour. Now go to the dungeons and
free Killian. Go!”
She took charge of the vial from my hand that consisted the Wilderroot stem while I slipped away from teh chaos or atleast tried to.
The guards had flooded in from all the sides after Martin too called for reinforcement and I could see angry shouts being hurled from all the sides.
