I Bought the exiled king (by Natalie Winter) novel Chapter 34

Chapter 34

Valencia

My mind was whirring as the cogs of my brain kept turning

What was truly going on here?

My gaze flicked to Thomas again, and I observed him.

He was fidgeting with his fingers and looking around nervously.

He tried talking to me a bit more about random things, but I wanted to know more.

So, I casually picked up the wine glass and swirled the contents in my hand before asking

Dont you think it’s funny that I was almost going to get killed as punishment for my crimes but I am sitting in this posh restaurant, enjoying this wine with you.

He had just picked up a glass of water to drink, but my question made him spill it all over himself.

He coughed and hastily grabbed tissues to dry himself.

I only watched him with an eagle’s eye.

Thomas placed the glass back on the table and gave me a flustered look.

Yeah, it is strange. You have been working at the Bureau for five long years. How can they do that to you?

He asked, and I shrugged. No idea

He then pretended to play with the peas on his plate and asked.

But then how are you here I mean. If you say you were going to get a death punishment.

I waited before replying.

Did he know what had occurred in the conference room? How much had Mrs Briggs told him?

The Goddess’s blessing I say,I said and pretended to look up at the sky in gratitude.

I even joined my hands and whispered some prayer to the sky as a thanks for saving me.

Thomas leaned forward and asked, The directorhe is strict, right? I heard he doesn’t forgive easily.

I again didn’t reply to that and waited for him to fill in the awkward silence.

Thomas took a bite of his food and continued,

I mean, Mrs Briggs isn’t really a fan of the junior associates, so I wonder how they changed it from a death punishment to something else.

Something else.

So he didn’t know what was going to happen to me.

Or who had saved me?

I gave him an innocent look.

Yeah. I wondered that too. They both were hellbent on ensuring I dont live another day.

I said with worry all over my face.

He scooted even further and dropped his voice to a whisper.

Then was there a third person who changed the decision?

There was curiosity all over his face.

I dont really know. I couldn’t think straight either way.

He seemed to want to say something more, but then decided against it and only gave a flustered smile.

At least t you are not dying. And we can go on many more such lunches.

He said even though he kept eying me nervously.

My phone rang, and I was glad it was Sophia, because I wanted answers and Thomas didn’t have any.

Sol pretended to have to meet her and left him at the table after quickly saying goodbye.

I narrated the entire incident to Sophia, who was equally shocked on hearing my narration.

No way! You think Thomas is spying on you?

Think? I heard him say that he put a tracker in my purse. That is a legit prool.

Sophia’s response was laced with worry.

Girl, I don’t like what is going on. This Bureau now seems like a shady place. Just resign or something.

I scoffed at that.

I have given five years of my life to this place. I am not going anywhere without fighting for my innocence.

Not even to this Black Shore?

Sophia asked, and that made me stop in my tracks.

lan had said that he would take me to whatever place this was and then disappeared. The verdict had already been given two days ago and there was no sign of him.

I wasn’t sure what to expect this time.

I dont know, Soph. He shows up when I start to lose hope.I said, biting my lower lip nervously.

Well, we will figure it out later. For now, just come over to my place. I dont want you spending the night alone.

I felt relieved to hear that

And also check if you have another tracker or something on your person.

Yep, onto that

I disconnected my phone and thoroughly checked my dress, and hair, but there was nothing I opened my purse that didn’t have many items but couldn’t find anything out of place in it.

Why was I being tracked?

This entire thing was very weird.

Confusing thoughts raced through my mind that came up with wild theories as I reached the lane that would lead me to Sophia’s home.

Hooked around, the night was dark and a single street light flickered in front of me.

And then suddenly, out of nowhere, I saw a figure appear right under the street light.

I could have sworn he wasn’t there before, but now he was.

He was clad in all black. Black jeans, a black hoodie, and a black mask to cover his face.

But then he slowly took the cap of his hoodie off, and I was staring at lan again.

His handsome face looked worried and a little exhausted.

lanI barely managed to whisper, but he quickly came towards me and pulled me to the side.

His fingers were a little cold because of the chilly air, but his hold on my shoulders was surprisingly warm and gentle..

With one hand, he pulled me to the side in the bushes and with the other he whispered, I am here to collect you.

Collect me?

*Thomas had put a tracker in my purse,I blurted out the first thing that popped in my head.

I was not sure why I was telling him that.

But I was feeling a little nervous that people were spying on me, people that I thought to be friends and colleagues.

lan smiled and cupped my face.

You are not safe here, Valencia. I need you to come with me.

Why did the fact that there had been a tracker on my person not surprise him?
