Barry took a step back.
That slap came out of nowhere, stunning him.
“Samuel, what are you doing?” Emma shouted, more in anger. “A guide is not supposed to hit a client, no matter the offense. You'll be fined for violating that rule. It would cost you your commission f*e.”
“Shut up, newbie,” Samuel barked at Emma. “I know that more than anyone, but I don't care as long as I ring some sense into this stupid security guard.”
Barry touched his cheeks where he had been struck.
Ever since he was a child, everyone had always hit him.
His father struck him, he was struck by his peers, struck by the Raven family and struck by strangers.
Barry hated it. He was sick and tired of people hitting him. He glared murderously at Samuel. “You slapped me. You will pay dearly for that.”
Samuel laughed mockingly at Barry. “You can do nothing, you piece of trash. You're nothing but a poor security guard who has no business shopping here in the first place.”
“Samuel, I'm going to file a complaint to the management over your actions to my client,” Emma snapped, standing between him and Barry. “Step away from Barry. I cannot overlook what you just did, even if you're my senior.”
“So what? Nobody is stopping you,” Samuel scoffed. “Make your reports. They would never fire me. I've made this store their biggest sales in ten years. I'm the most important guide in this store and if I leave, the organization would suffer.”
Emma gritted her teeth. She knew he was right. The management would only let Samuel off the hook with a warning.
They wouldn't be stupid to let him go. Business would grow slow.
Still, she was mad that Samuel had to slap Barry. It was wrong.
“Really?” Barry cocked his head, his eyes growing darker. “So because you're the best guide in Crestfall Star, you believe you're invisible.”
“That's right,” Samuel raised his nose in the air. “I've built an excellent reputation in this mall. They even wanted to give me a promotion, but I decline because there's a lot of money to be made from commission fees and tips.”
“I see,” Barry ran his fingers through his hair. “So all I have to do is terminate your employment from Crestfall Star, and you'll be destroyed.”
“Don't be stupid,” Samuel chuckled. “I've made an abundance of money in this business. Unlike most people, I've saved enough to retire whenever I please. You're just a stupid, poor security guard. You can't do a thing to me.”
Emma shoved Samuel away.
There was a glint of anger in her eyes. “I've had it with you, Samuel. What's your deal with Barry? He's done nothing to you and yet, you hate him so much.”
“What's my deal, you ask?” Samuel dipped his hands in his pockets and laughed. “Because I despise seeing losers like him, that's why.”
“That doesn't make any sense. It's not Barry's fault he's a security guard. Regardless of his financial standing, you have no right to hate him,” Emma countered.
“You know, I was once a security guard, a decade ago,” Samuel revealed after a brief pause. “I was ridiculed by people above me. It sucked being at the bottom.”
“That's why I worked hard,” Samuel's voice went up. “I clawed my way to the top and now that I'm at the top, I can look down on the poor and destroy them.”
Barry stepped forward to Samuel. “If your reason for climbing to the top was to trample on the weak and poor, then you don't deserve to remain at the top.”
Barry paused as he stared eye to eye with Samuel, his eyes burning. “I'm going to make sure you fall to the deepest bottom with no single hope of ever making a comeback.”
Samuel grinned. “What's this? You think you scare me with those big words of yours? Well, I've made my point clear, loser. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have my clients waiting for me.”
Samuel returned to the fat man and his family.
Emma turned to Barry and inclined her back to him in a bow. “I apologize for Samuel's action towards you, Barry. Take it out on me if you have to.”
Barry didn't listen to what she said.
He had his gaze locked on Samuel. “Emma, how would you like to take over Samuel's position and job?”
Emma looked up sharply at Barry. “What are you talking about? It's impossible to get him fired, talk less of taking his position.”
“But if you're presented with an opportunity, you'll take it, right?” Barry asked, still keeping his gaze fixed on Samuel. “Be honest with me.”
Emma hesitated for a long time. Then she looked away, nodding. “This might be selfish of me admitting it, but yes, I would. I took on this job because it pays well. With the commission f*e, I can further my way through college and take care of my ill mother.”
