Carter couldn’t bear to see the kids upset, but saying they could go back to how things used to be felt too late.
Rhea seemed determined to divorce, especially after losing their baby.
“Dad, when we have a break from school, let’s go see Mom. She isn’t feeling well, right? We’ll take care of her, and she’ll come back,” Arielle suggested.
Carter said, “Your mom already has a man taking care of her.”
“That’s her brother. It’s normal for him to take care of her,” Adrian replied.
Carter wanted to laugh at the children’s innocence but couldn’t bring himself to shatter it with the truth. “I’ll go with you if your mom agrees.”
The siblings‘ eyes lit up, and they immediately extended their pinkies. “Pinky promise!”
Carter smiled at their excitement. “Alright, pinky promise.”
Naturally, he wanted to see Rhea again. At the very least, she needed to give him a proper explanation regarding her relationship with George.
After six years together, Carter didn’t want to believe that Rhea was vain or materialistic. He wondered if she and George were really just friends, or if there was some kind of business arrangement between them.
Carter was her husband. If she needed anything, why would she ask someone else and keep it from
him?
The next morning, Lauren came again.
The twin siblings came downstairs with their backpacks.
When she saw her, Arielle said, “You don’t have to come this Sunday.”
Lauren asked, “What’s the matter, sweetie? Are you still upset with me?”
Adrian replied, “We told Dad that we’ll take care of Mom this Sunday. We told Mom this morning, and she said we could go.”
They were going to take care of Rhea together?
The driver then took the kids off to school.

Lauren sat in a chair, lost in thought.
Soon, Carter came downstairs. Lauren got up and said, “Carter, I made breakfast. Have some.”
“Didn’t I tell you to rest more?”
“It’s fine. I’m not tired.”
At the dining table, Lauren hesitated. “Carter, my stomach has been feeling off. I want to go to the hospital for a checkup.”
Carter frowned. “Does it still hurt?”
“Yes.” Lauren lowered her head. “I’m a little worried. I finally got better, and I want to spend more time with you and the kids.”
“Then get it checked.”
“I made an appointment with a specialist this Sunday.” Lauren smiled softly. “Are you free? I’m too scared to go alone. Cancer is really terrifying.”
Carter fell silent when he heard her mention the appointment for this Sunday.
Lauren’s tone was sad yet restrained. “It’s okay if you’re busy. I’ll just go by myself. I don’t want to tell Grandma. She’s old, and I don’t want her to worry.”
Carter asked, “What about Saturday?”
“The executives from Eryham are coming then, so I booked it for Sunday.” Lauren sat beside him, her voice soft and weak as she asked again, “Can you come with me?”
That evening, Carter told the kids about it.
