Gabriel looked around and whispered, “It was someone from the military. I couldn’t even find out who they were. It’s obvious what kind of influence they must have!”
The person almost drove the Henderson family into a dead end, all because of a single careless
– remark from Peter. The thought sent chills down Gabriel’s spine.
Offending Lauren might not be a big deal, but Rhea? She must never be crossed. Her connections ran too deep.
Carter chuckled. “Mr. Henderson, I think you’ve got it wrong. Rhea doesn’t know anyone in the military. I suspect it was George who had someone take action.”
As far as he could tell, Rhea was the one fanning the flames behind the scenes, which was why things had gotten so out of hand.
After all, she was the type to even send a placenta to him. She was capable of anything.
Carter couldn’t fathom how she had changed into this unpredictable version of herself. At this point, even if he wanted to salvage the marriage, Rhea seemed somewhat undeserving.
He thought that she had really crossed the line this time. She was the one responsible, but Lauren ended up shouldering all the blame and even faced Gabriel’s and Helen’s hostility.
“George?” Gabriel’s eyes widened. “You mean the one from the Snider family in Draventh?”
“Yes.”
Gabriel gasped. He felt grateful he had just apologized to Rhea.
Otherwise…
Others might not know about George, but Gabriel was a Draventh native. Although he mostly stayed in Colburn for business and only occasionally traveled between the two cities, he was aware of the Snider family heir.
Even now, the thought of the ruthless measures George took in his youth still gave Gabriel chills.
Carter said, “Mr. Henderson, I’ll take my leave now.”
Carter went to Ravenshade Villa to see Lauren, worried that she would remain upset. As he expected, when Lauren opened the door, her eyes were still red.
She pitifully said, “Carter…”

Chapter 129
“Why are you crying? This isn’t your fault,” Carter said as he entered.
Lauren was drinking alone. After sitting down, she smiled wistfully. “My family has been bankrupt for years. People tend to kick someone when they’re down. I can understand that.”
Carter frowned. “Don’t say that. You still have me. I promise no one will treat you like this again.”
Lauren looked at him gratefully. Then, she threw herself into his arms, crying as though the world had wronged her.
“My family’s broken, I had cancer, my children are estranged, and now… I have to take the blame for someone else. I really…”
Carter’s heart ached. He also thought that everything was too unfair for Lauren. He instinctively held her gently and said, “Don’t cry.”
After a while, Lauren lifted her head. Her tear–streaked, delicate face looked extremely pitiful. “Can you drink a little with me?” she asked.
“You’re not feeling well. Your stomach isn’t fully recovered.”
“Just a little. I’m in a bad mood,” Lauren said softly.
Reluctantly, Carter joined her in drinking some wine.
