It seemed that Rhea was involved again. Carter wondered why everything seemed to go wrong
whenever she was around.
“Don’t waste your energy on Rhea. She just doesn’t think before she acts,” Carter said.
Rhea? Was he talking about the Rhea they all knew?
Nearby guests who were familiar with the Ravelle family exchanged suspicious glances, wondering what these two were up to. They couldn’t believe these two dared talk behind the back of the Ravelle family’s only precious daughter.
At that thought, the onlookers quietly drifted away.
Noticing that, even the business peers who had been chatting with Carter earlier kept their distance
now.
After soothing Lauren, Carter turned back, only to find the area around them empty. He frowned.” Lauren, don’t cry in a setting like this.”
Carter was slightly frustrated. Why did Lauren throw herself at him without regard for the occasion? After all, he hadn’t divorced Rhea yet. If this got out, it could reflect badly on Jamison Group.
Lauren snapped out of it. She quickly glanced around and hurriedly wiped away her tears.
The Donovan family’s butler, Stanley Moore, came out to greet them. “Dear guests, please take your seats.”
The Donovan residence’s garden was enormous. It could accommodate nearly a thousand people. Over a hundred tables were stretching in a long row, each attended by two maids.
As the banquet started, men and women were again separated.
Lauren felt completely out of place. She didn’t know any of the women and sat there awkwardly. After scanning the area for a while, she noticed an empty seat and walked over.
“Hi,” she said, trying to break the ice. She thought that by taking the initiative, she might ease the awkwardness of the unfamiliar situation.
But she had misjudged.
The seated ladies looked up when they heard her speak. After recognizing her face, they gradually got up one by one.
“Let’s move to the next table.”

All five women left, leaving Lauren alone at the table. Her body stiffened with awkwardness.
She helplessly glanced toward the men’s side.
Carter was busy mingling, making connections left and right, and had no time to pay attention to her.
Holding back tears, Lauren pulled out her phone and sent a text to Zoe back in Colburn. She hoped that pretending to be busy would ease her discomfort.
She thought that more women would eventually sit at her table, so she just needed to wait. But once again, she had misjudged.
The women who arrived later all bypassed her empty table and went elsewhere.
As the seats filled up, hers remained barren. Lauren couldn’t bear it any longer. She stood up to find
Carter.
But a maid blocked her path between the men’s and women’s sections. “Ma’am, where are you going?”
Everyone spoke in hushed tones, keeping the noise to a minimum. So when the maid asked her the question, it drew countless gazes.
Lauren looked at Carter desperately. “I’m looking for Car… Mr. Jamison:”
