“We don’t know her, Mom,” Arielle said.

That angered Sharon. “Your birth mother is the closest person you’ve got, you brat! How can you side with an outsider? Anyone can be your stepmother, but you only have one birth mother! Can’t you tell the difference at your age? It looks like someone didn’t raise you right!”

She didn’t think twice before speaking because of her relationship with Lauren. So, she didn’t realize that her words grated on Carter’s nerves.

The next second, a dark figure lunged toward her under the dim lighting of the hallway and gave her

a hard slap across the face. It was delivered with such force that Sharon almost twisted her ankle in

her high heels.

She stared at the figure in shock. “You… Did you just slap me?”

Rhea exuded frostiness as she turned back to look at Arielle and Adrian. That was enough to make them both cover their eyes.

Arielle said crisply, “Mom is teaching the bad guys a lesson. Good kids shouldn’t watch!”

Rhea smiled faintly. “That’s right. Bad people should be taught a lesson. They tricked you into drinking alcohol, were rude to you, and even tried to twist your values. People like them aren’t worthy of your respect. Can you remember that?”

“Yes, Mom!” Arielle said.

Adrian had his eyes covered, too. “Good luck, Mom!”

Sharon was furious. “I’ve heard all about how you throw your weight around and oppress others. Now, I’m getting a taste of what that’s like! No wonder Carter doesn’t want you. You egg on other people’s kids and even get violent in public! I have to-”

Carolyn didn’t wait for her to finish speaking. She couldn’t take it anymore. She stormed forward and grabbed Sharon’s arm, forcing her back inside the private room from which she’d emerged. 1

Her girlfriends followed.

Zoe eyed them warily. “What are you doing? Are you going to hit us after taking away someone else’s children?”

Liora smiled. “Of course not. You guys keep saying that a child’s birth mother will always be more important than their stepmother, right? I’ll give you children if you adore them so much.”

She turned and shot Valerie a look. The latter took a few steps back before sending a text on her phone. Soon, the bar’s professional security arrived. They were all burly, brusque men.

They made a beeline for Sharon and Zoe after entering the private room. They grabbed the two women and practically dragged them into the room’s small attached restroom.

They screamed in fear.

“What are you doing? Let me go!”

“Stop dragging me!”

Liora looked at them calmly. “You think birth mothers are the best, right? You can have a taste of what it’s like being one, then.”

Lauren was frightened. “Stop, please! This is against the law!”

Carter wanted to stop the debacle, but Rhea stood in his way. The look in her eyes wasn’t like anything he’d ever seen.

A mocking smile played on her lips. “Carter, what you need to do now is take the children to the hospital, not linger here and stick your nose into someone else’s business.”

He had once used similar words with her when saying that she was nothing but a stepmother.

“You’re ruthless. When did you become like this?” he roared.

The only answer he got was a punch squarely in the face. He staggered a few steps back before steadying himself, and his vision went black for a second.

Everyone gasped.

Liora retracted her right hand, shaking it out. “Damn, that hurt.”
