The truth was, Carter had overestimated Rhea. The day he had been shut out, every notion he had held about her came crashing down.
He knew that someone as sharp as Liam would never leave him and the kids waiting in the night breeze like that. It would be completely beneath him–unless Liam didn’t care about Rhea’s affairs
at all.
“Rhea wanted me to feel as if losing her was like losing a treasure,” Carter scoffed. “She was wrong.”
After Rhea refused to sign the consent for his surgery, he finally woke up. Rhea wasn’t the right partner, and she couldn’t elevate his career. He wouldn’t fantasize about a happy life with her
anymore.
After all the twists and turns, he felt that Lauren was still the right choice.
“Only Lauren will devote herself to me completely. She endured so much humiliation because of Rhea. I won’t let her be hurt or disappointed again. I’ll treat her right. One day, Rhea will realize that losing me is her real loss.”
Carter wouldn’t be knocked down so easily. Gossip and rumors were nothing. If a partnership fell through, he could just find another one.
As Peter listened, his brow furrowed tight. “Y–You really think you know Lauren?”
“Of course. I know her completely. She’s patient, never complains, and is both kind and gentle. I can’t even imagine how helpless she must have felt facing Rhea on the day of the accident before I woke up.” Carter’s anger flared at the thought.
Peter didn’t know what to say and just turned to leave.
Carter looked at the two children. “Do you remember what I said?”
Arielle and Adrian looked up at him.
Arielle asked, “Dad, are you asking us to badmouth Mom?”
Adrian shook his head. “No way we’re doing that.”
“You two…” Frustrated, Carter signaled Alisha. “Take them home!”
The next day, Carter calculated the potential benefits from the partnership with Eryham and the deal Lauren might secure by seeing her godfather. With that, he believed that saving Jamison Group
should be simple.

Just then, his phone rang.
“Mr. Jamison! The project lead for the Eryham project has embezzled the funds and vanished!” Harvey Cooke, the deputy CEO of Jamison Group, sounded frantic.
Embezzled the funds and vanished?
Carter’s mind went blank for a split second. Then, he immediately asked, “What about the shipments that already went out?”
“They were intercepted, too! We can’t even find the guy now!” Harvey replied.
The situation was dire.
Carter had sent the goods ahead to show goodwill in the partnership. He had assumed that the payment would follow, but now…
Surprisingly, he remained calm. “Report it to the police. It’s fine. No matter how bad it is, it can’t get
worse than this.”
As long as Lauren could secure the deal with her godfather, he could work with an overseas company.
It wouldn’t make a difference.
But this Eryham deal had started because Lauren had pulled the strings.
Carter instantly panicked. He grabbed his new phone and called Lauren, but no one answered.
He admired her thoughtfulness, yet he couldn’t help feeling that it was completely unforgivable that she didn’t answer the phone.
