At noon, Rhea packed a small suitcase and headed out with Nathan.

On the way, Nathan glanced at her. “Haven’t been in touch with George lately?”

Rhea understood what he really wanted to ask. “No.”

She still couldn’t face George or even think back to the question he had asked her that night. Over time, she almost felt like it had been a dream.

When they arrived at the country estate, Rhea immediately spotted George. Dressed casually, he leaned against the car roof with one hand while talking on the phone with the other.

She recognized his silhouette instantly.

But then, she noticed someone else.

“Kate?” Rhea exclaimed.

Kate hadn’t expected Rhea to be there. She pressed her lips together and walked over. “Rhea, you’re here too?”

“Nathan invited me. What about you?”

“I’m with my parents and Mr. and Mrs. Snider,” Kate replied.

Rhea nodded. Later, when she had a chance, she whispered to Nathan, “Are they really trying to push George and Kate together?”

Nathan lit a cigarette, squinting. “By all logic, George wouldn’t go along with that.”

After all, he had thought that George was in love with Rhea. Nathan didn’t know what was going on.

Halfway through the call, George turned around, and his eyes met Rhea’s. He was speaking to someone on the phone, but that faint smile was for Rhea.

Noticing that, Kate lowered her head and looked away.

When the call ended, Nathan suddenly appeared behind George. “George.”

George turned. “Yeah?”

“What are you doing here?” Nathan asked.

George raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”

“Why did your parents bring you here with the Pearsons?”

George put away his phone. “I was tricked by my mom into delivering something. They ended up stopping my car and wouldn’t let me leave.”

Nathan studied him suspiciously. “Are you telling the truth?”

“Why would I lie?”

Nathan smiled. “That’s more like it.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Snider, Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, we’re heading that way with George,” Nathan called out.

Kate’s mother, Evie Palmer, urged, “Kate, go with them too. It’s so boring for you to stay here with us.”

Evie had always liked George and would be thrilled if he were to become her son–in–law.

Kate hesitated. “I don’t-”

“Come on, Kate. Join us for the barbecue,” Rhea invited.

Kate pressed her lips together before saying, “Alright. Let’s go.”

The two ladies walked together.

When Rhea wasn’t smiling, her face carried a subtle sharpness. Her gentle, virtuous look back then was just a performance to please Carter.

Kate, on the other hand, had a delicate, soft charm. She was effortlessly appealing.

Her eyes kept drifting to George’s figure ahead. She had liked him for years—just as long as he had

liked Rhea.
