“After you, Mr. Snider,” Dexter said.

Spotting Lauren on her knees, Dexter paused in surprise before breaking into a smile. “Ms. Thayer? What are you doing here?”
Lauren didn’t even dare to raise her head.
Liora said, “She’s begging Ms. Ravelle to save her son. She just kicked her out earlier, and here she is again, begging her. She’s acting like the whole world should revolve around her family.”
“I see.” Dexter sighed. “Lauren, aren’t you the expert at begging? Back when you were asking me for help, you used every bit of sweet talk and flattery. Why don’t you try those tricks now?”
Lauren’s eyes were bloodshot as she shouted, “Shut up! You assaulted me. How dare you bring that up!”
Dexter froze for a moment at her outburst, then let out a laugh. “Assaulted you? Are you kidding me? You were the one begging me to be your godfather. Don’t blame me because you sold yourself short. Just because I didn’t help you that last time, you’re twisting the story and smearing my name? Lauren, don’t think that no one knows what you’ve done.”
Those words had changed the way everyone looked at Lauren.
Carter’s gaze was the sharpest of all. It was as if his stare could pierce straight through Lauren’s back.
One by one, the crowd began filing into the Ravelle residence.
…
An hour later, the first snow of the season in Draventh came without warning. Flakes drifted down in silence, light and unhurried.
Rhea stood by the window. Her friends were chatting on the other side of the room. No one dared interrupt her.
From behind her, George spoke up. “Still stewing over those two scums?”
The moment she turned, their eyes met. She blurted, “Have you lost more weight?”
George gave a faint smile. “I guess so. I’ve just been busy.”
He stood tall, like a lone cedar in the snow, cold and unyielding. But his eyes, which held no one else but Rhea, were searing and relentless.

She quickly looked away, unable to withstand the intensity of his gaze. “Philip.”
Philip stepped forward. “Yes, Ms. Ravelle.”
“Take care of the guests. I’m heading out for a while.

Rhea pulled on her coat, took a document envelope in hand, and had a maid hold the umbrella as she stepped out into the snow.
At the floor–to–ceiling window, George never moved. His gaze followed her every step, as if he couldn’t let her out of his sight.
Outside the Ravelle residence, snow blanketed the ground in a thin white veil.
The moment Carter saw Rhea step out, his eyes lit up with desperate hope.
Rhea walked toward Lauren. The latter kept her head bowed, unwilling to look up.
After a pause, Rhea said calmly, “You should go. Don’t ruin the mood of my guests.”
Lauren’s head snapped up as she realized something. “You’re playing me?”
Rhea smiled coldly. “You’ve acted in front of me more times than I can count. Is playing you once really too much? Since you claim to love those kids more than anyone, beg everyone else one by one. Let’s see how far you get.
She stood beneath the umbrella, her gaze cutting sharp for the first time. “Carter.”
A ripple of unease passed through him.
Rhea continued softly, “Don’t use the kids to chain me down again. I don’t make a habit of playing stepmom. As for Adrian’s surgery, once our divorce is finalized, someone will be there to take care of
