Chapter 276
Rhea turned and walked away.
The snow was falling harder.
Inside that light envelope was Lauren’s biggest lie.
Carter had already picked it up.
Lauren shot to her feet. Ignoring the sharp ache in her numb knees, she lunged for it. “Carter, let me see it first!”
He dodged her hand and passed it straight to Glen beside him.
At that moment, he wasn’t curious about what the envelope held. The only thing on his mind was Rhea’s words.
She was willing to abandon the kids just to divorce him.
Looking at the vast Ravelle residence, Carter felt a wave of regret crash over him. If he had this kind of powerful family backing him, rising to George’s level would have been effortless.
He had once mistaken Rhea for being petty, and because of that, he thought her powerful family didn’t really amount to much.
But in reality, Lauren had blindsided him again and again.
Maybe the one who had been wrong all along was him.
Carter forced himself to calm down. “Back to the hospital.‘

Adrian was still in surgery.
Lauren’s gaze remained fixed on the envelope in Glen’s hands. Her mind raced through countless possibilities.
Carter had barely gotten in the car before she climbed in too.
Her nerves were like steel. She acted as if nothing had happened. “Carter, we can’t let her tear us apart right now. She doesn’t even care about Adrian. She only cares about getting what she wants. Why should we beg her? Just give her the divorce certificate. We’ll take care of Adrian ourselves.‘
Carter turned to her. “Adrian’s your child. Why are you asking Rhea to care about him?”
Lauren faltered. “Because… Because the kids have called her ‘Mom‘ for years. Once you’re a mother, you’re always a mother. That responsibility doesn’t just vanish.”

For some reason, Carter found Lauren’s words absurd. But then he thought back. Wasn’t he the one who had demanded the same thing from Rhea back then?
Perhaps Rhea had found him just as ridiculous.
The more he thought about it, the more restless he became.
Suddenly, he realized that deep down, he didn’t want to lose Rhea. What he really wanted was for her to obey him, to be a little more compliant and gracious.
But now, it was too late to argue about who was right and who was wrong. Rhea had made up her
mind about the divorce.
Carter’s gaze shifted to the window.
What if…
What if he didn’t agree to the divorce?
At the hospital, Adrian’s surgery ended not long after they returned.
Adrian was wheeled into a ward. His head was wrapped in bandages, and his arms and legs were bruised and battered.
The sight made Carter’s chest ache.
But there were still matters to take care of. He had someone stay with Adrian in the hospital, then he went to find Amelia.
