“Stop calling for Carter!” Peter couldn’t hold it in any longer as he dragged Lauren out of the ER.
Lauren was surprised at his outburst. “What’s wrong with me caring about him? Peter, I think I should remind you. Carter and I are a couple, but you constantly stick your nose into our business. It’s really crossing the line.”
‘Am I crossing the line, or are you? Carter hasn’t even divorced Rhea yet, and here you are, acting all cozy around him. What, are you volunteering to be his mistress?”
Peter ground his teeth. “You saw Rhea’s parents there just now, and you still made a show of caring about Carter. What’s your real motive? You claim to love him, but all I can see is that you don’t want him to be happy. You’re dragging him down!”
Peter’s words hit Lauren like a dagger. Her eyes reddened from anger, but she looked almost pitiful.
“Peter, I—”
“Enough!”
Carter wheeled himself out.
Peter gave Lauren a cold glance, then moved to push Carter down the slope.
Lauren hurried over, showing her concern. “Carter, it’s snowing. Don’t stay out for too long.”
In the past, her gentle and caring nature was exactly what Carter needed and cherished. He felt that a woman like her was truly virtuous, unlike Rhea at the time, who was jealous and hard to tolerate.

“Lauren, do you really care about me?” he asked.
“Of course I do,” she replied, confused. “What’s wrong? Did Rhea’s parents say something? Don’t-”
“I didn’t even mention her parents,” Carter cut her off sharply. “Stop instinctively blaming Rhea.”
Peter, who was watching from behind, finally exhaled. It seemed that Carter had finally opened his
eyes.
Lauren bit her lip and said softly, “Carter, I wasn’t thinking that far. I just worry about you.‘
She was about to pull out the same old trick again–playing the victim and pretending to be weak.
But Carter had grown tired of it. “Lauren, you are gentle and thoughtful. But your concern has become increasingly misplaced. Push it too far, and it looks downright foolish. And like I told you

before, this thing between us… ends here. The kids don’t accept you, and I have to consider them. So, you don’t need to come anymore.”
With that, Peter pushed Carter ahead, moving at a rather quick pace. He didn’t want Lauren to start talking about the past and about how hard she had struggled, and risk wavering Carter’s resolve.
Watching them leave, Lauren clenched her teeth. Her grip on the thermal container tightened.
He was considering the kids? Those words sounded so noble, yet so fake. This was clearly the result
of him weighing the pros and cons!
Naturally, Lauren could tell why Carter was regretting it.
Back when Rhea had no support, Carter didn’t care. Now, having learned about her background and
