Cynthia had been lost in thought and didn’t even notice that George had returned. She quickly composed herself. “You’re back?”

George had been busy all day with hardly a moment to rest. As soon as he got home, he sent Rhea a message to check in.

George turned around when he heard his name.
Kate was in an apron, holding a plate of freshly cooked food and smiling gently at him.
George’s expression remained unchanged. He responded faintly, “Hi.”
He didn’t even ask why Kate was here.
Maverick said, “Mrs. Snider, dinner’s ready. Should we wait for Mr. Snider?”
“No need,” Cynthia said. “He doesn’t know what time he’ll be back. Let’s eat first.”
At the dining table, Cynthia and Kate sat next to each other. George washed his hands before joining
them.
Once seated, he would occasionally check his phone and reply to messages. A gentle smile would appear on his face without him realizing.
Cynthia and Kate, sitting across from him, could see it clearly.
Kate withdrew her gaze.
Cynthia immediately understood the meaning behind that smile. She figured that George was probably texting Rhea.
“George, Kate’s a guest here. It’s quite rude to always be on your phone,” Cynthia remarked.
George looked up and took a sip of water. He actually asked, “Do you mean that I should talk to Kate?
The retort left Cynthia momentarily speechless. “You… It’s rare for Kate to stay for dinner. You

“You can talk to her. I’m texting Rhea. She isn’t feeling well,” George said.

It was a lie. Rhea wasn’t feeling unwell. She was even sharing updates about dinner at home with
him.
Anyone could sense George’s cold indifference. Cynthia set down her cutlery, clearly frustrated. ” George, I didn’t raise you this way.”
George calmly sent a message to Rhea. “I’ll talk to my mom for a bit. It won’t take long.”
After sending it, he turned off his phone’s screen and looked at Kate. His voice was flat as he asked, ‘ What are you trying to do?”
Kate’s lashes trembled. “What?”
George shifted his gaze to Cynthia. “And Mom, what are you trying to do?”
His assertive and straightforward manner left people defenseless.
“I’m not trying to do anything. I’m just saying that Kate’s here-”
