Kate quickly said, “You’ve misunderstood, Mrs. Snider. This is just my guess. After all, I never thought that Rhea would have any feelings for George. But I can’t really ask her much about it. With how things went between her and Carter, she probably isn’t in the mood to overthink things.
“Maybe it’s just a spur–of–the–moment thing. We should wait to see how this plays out. Even if they really have feelings for each other, don’t be upset, Mrs. Snider. Rhea is a good woman. She’s kind and considerate. She’ll get along well with George.”
Despite Kate’s words, Cynthia’s mind was already leaning toward the idea that Rhea was using George, which worsened her impression of Rhea.
Cynthia raised her head and looked at Kate kindly. “Why don’t you stay for dinner tonight? I went abroad recently and picked out a dress for you. Try it later. You can wear it for Mrs. Marsh’s birthday next week.”
The “Mrs. Marsh” Cynthia referred to was Abbie Willis, Liora’s mother–in–law.
Kate smiled gently. “Thank you so much, Mrs. Snider.”
“I really like you. Anything I buy for you feels worth it,” Cynthia said.
In her eyes, the perfect daughter–in–law was someone like Kate–well–mannered, calm, composed, and carrying the presence of the lady of a family.
She thought Rhea, though a good woman, was far too headstrong. After all, the latter had married down secretly against her parents‘ wishes and lowered herself to be a stepmother.
Cynthia wasn’t very fond of her.
Yesterday, when George had dinner with her and Steven, he had only said one sentence. “I’ll handle my own affairs, so you don’t have to worry.”
Other than that, he hadn’t said a single word on the subject.
It would be fine if it were really to help Rhea fend off rumors. But what if it wasn’t?
George had always been stubborn. Once he set his mind on something, no one could persuade him
otherwise.
Cynthia snapped back to reality and went to the living room.
Kate helped her sit down.
Cynthia instructed, “Maverick, add a few more dishes to tonight’s dinner. Kate will stay for dinner.”

“Yes, Mrs. Snider,” Maverick Cardenas, the Snider family’s butler, replied.

Kate said, “Mrs. Snider, I can cook. I know the recipes of a few dishes from your hometown. Would you like to try my cooking?”
Cynthia was surprised. “You know how to make dishes from my hometown?”
Cynthia was from the south. In her youth, she earned a place at Draventh College with top grades, gaining a reputation as a gifted scholar. Later, she met Steven.
After marrying him, she returned home only occasionally, and after her parents passed away, she never went back.
That was why Cynthia appreciated a gentle and elegant woman like Kate so much.
