Suddenly, Evie began coughing violently, and blood appeared on her palm.

“Mom!” Kate shouted in alarm.

“Honey!”

Evie was rushed to the hospital immediately.

However, the test results hit the Pearsons like a sledgehammer. Evie was in the late stage of lung cancer.

The blood from her cough was simply because she had coughed so hard that her throat had torn.

Kate nearly collapsed. She forced out a strained smile as she asked the doctor, “Are you joking? Could it be a misdiagnosis? My mom has regular checkups. How could she…”

“Her last checkup was back in February. That was almost a year ago,” the doctor said.

Cancer was terrifying in its speed and unpredictability.

Kate sank into a chair. The color on her face drained visibly.

“Ms. Pearson…”

Tanner helped Kate out of the doctor’s office. “Ms. Pearson, your family needs you now. Mr. Pearson is old and still hasn’t fully recovered from being in custody. You can’t afford to falter now.“‘

Kate steadied herself as fast as possible.

With medical advances of that day, even if a full cure wasn’t possible, there should at least be ways to relieve or manage it.

“Don’t tell my parents yet. I’ll contact a specialist. If Mom asks, just say… there’s a shadow in her lungs that needs attention,” Kate instructed.

Evie was smart. So, hiding the truth from her completely was impossible.

Tanner nodded. “Understood!”

Finances weren’t an issue for the Pearsons, but the real need was access to a medical expert.

Later, the doctor said, “Ms. Pearson, I can recommend a specialist in this area for you.”
