Over the years, George had changed so much that many had forgotten his true nature. The fruit knife that missed Connor by a hair’s breadth was restrained by the law, not by George’s moral limits.
George released Connor and handed the knife to the bodyguard. He flashed a smile and extended a hand to Connor. “I got a bit carried away. I hope you don’t mind, Mr. Pearson. Please, sit.”
Connor stared at him with widened eyes, his heart still racing. One moment, he was nearly stabbed in the eye. Now, he was being asked to sit?
He had been caught up in his emotions earlier. Thinking back now, a chill of fear ran through him. Only then did he remember that he had come to gather information, not to provoke George.
“George, let the Pearson family go, please.” Connor suddenly seemed aged. His hair was gray at the temples, and his voice was hoarse. Sweat dripped down his face.
George handed him a tissue. “You seem warm, Mr. Pearson. I’ll lower the AC. Also, it’s not that I’m refusing to let the Pearson family go. It’s your daughter who won’t let me go.”
“Kate has never wronged you!” Connor cried in agitation.
George lit a cigarette and slowly lifted his gaze. “Wronging Rhea is the same as wronging me.”
Connor said, “I guarantee that Kate won’t affect Rhea’s life from now on. I’ve already arranged a
suitable match for her.”
George looked him in the eye. “Can I trust you?”
Connor faltered.
George continued airily, “But since you’ve asked, I’ll respect that. You’re older than me, after all. I hope you can keep your promise.”
Steven arrived at the top floor of Snider Group, where the secretaries greeted him respectfully. “Mr. Snider, Mr. George is in the meeting room. Please wait a moment.”
“There’s no rush,” Steven said, settling in.
Ten minutes later, George appeared. “Dad.”
Steven asked, “Were you meeting a client?”
“No, I was with Connor Pearson.”
“What did he want?” Steven frowned.

“He probably knows that I’ve looked into his past with that college student and came to test the waters. He later promised Kate would stop causing trouble.” George poured him a glass of water.
Steven raised an eyebrow. “You believe him?”
“Of course not.‘
Steven paused, then said, “I always thought that he was two–faced, even when we were younger. He got into the literary circle with a fancy degree, met Evie, and built a so–called erudite family. For decades, he’s gone around boasting about being some cultured scholar.
“But what roots does his family have? Look at Evie’s funeral. There were barely a handful of people who showed up.” He concluded, “He’s selfish and values his reputation more than his life. He’ll bow to you now but scheme behind your back.”
Steven believed that Connor was like a snake hiding in the shadows.
