Elena said, “I’ve already exposed her. Why would she still come to me?”

Nathan was probably still recovering from the night before. His mind felt sluggish. “Exposed what?”
Elena ticked off her fingers. “Her ugly true colors, her twisted heart, and her corrupt thoughts.”
Nathan was stunned. “You just said everything bluntly?”
“Of course. Why? Should I have sugarcoated it?” Elena looked puzzled. “It’s not like I want to be her friend. Why should I tolerate her fake smiles? If I hadn’t been worried that you two were close, I’d have smashed a plate in her face last time.”
Nathan was silent for a moment. “You don’t have to take me into account.”
Elena shot back, “Who else would I take into account?”
Her eyes held no flattering smile–only genuine confusion.
Nathan cleared his throat. “I’m going to wash up.”
“Want me to help, Mr. Nat?” she asked.
Everyone else called him Mr. Nathan. So, why was it Mr. Nat when it came from her?
He drew a steady breath. “Don’t trouble yourself.”
Then, he headed upstairs.
Elena pouted a little.
An hour later, the food was ready.
No one knew if the meal counted as lunch or something else, but the two of them sat at the dining table.
The family chef had practically poured his whole life’s skill into the meal, making it especially lavish.
When Nathan glanced up, he noticed Elena’s eyes shining as she stared at the spread.
“Dig in,” he said.
“Okay!”
Ten minutes passed.

Although Nathan understood the old rule about not talking while eating, he had to admit that Elena approached her food with almost religious reverence.
From the moment she picked up her cutlery, she hadn’t said a single word. She ate without making the slightest sound, only filling her mouth bite by bite and chewing with full attention.
The food portion shrank before his eyes.
Hungover, he didn’t have much of an appetite. After a few bites, he just sipped water and watched
Elena eat.
Finally, Elena glanced up. “Aren’t you eating?”
“I’m full.”
Nathan put down his glass and paused for a moment. “Aren’t you… full?”
He had never seen a woman eat this much, and he had never seen Elena eat like this before.
Her eyes sparkled. “My dad always told me to respect food and the effort the chef puts in. With me, it’s a clean–plate policy.”
“Why didn’t you eat like this before?”
“That was outside. I’m still a proper young lady. I can’t exactly devour food in public. People would think that my parents starved me,” Elena explained.
She had a big appetite since childhood and was never picky about her food.
Nathan took another sip of water. “Go on then. Enjoy the food.”
He found it truly delightful to watch her eat.
