Rhea nodded and popped a chicken tender into her mouth. “This is so good. Did your chef make them?”

“Yeah. If you like them, take the whole batch,” George said casually.

“Is that really okay?”

George shot her a look. “Nathan treats this place like his own. He grabs whatever he wants. You can do the same.”

Suddenly, the front door swung open.

Nathan walked in, his expression dark. He stared at Rhea with a menacing look, like he was about to lose his temper.

George didn’t move from his seat.

The dining room fell silent for a full minute.

Nathan placed one hand on the edge of the island. “I really need to ask, what exactly do you like about him? I recall that you mentioned you met in the Math Olympiad prep class.

“Do you like him because he was good at math? I could’ve introduced you to someone who took second place at the International Math Olympiad.”

Rhea laughed. “Oh yeah? Where is he?”

“Right in front of you.”

Rhea was confused.

In front of her? However, Nathan had never participated in a Math Olympiad.

Then she saw George holding a cigarette between his fingers, a faint smile playing at his lips.

Her eyes widened. “You competed in the International Math Olympiad?”

Nathan was furious with her poor choices. “You ignore gold lying at your feet just to run off to some backwater dump!”

With that, he snatched the plate of chicken tenders and stormed back to his house next door.

Rhea blinked a few more times, stunned.

George chuckled. “I’ll fry some more for you.

When he returned with a fresh plate, Rhea leaned forward, her eyes full of curiosity as she asked, Did you really compete?”

George replied, “Yeah. It was around the time you and Carter placed first in the state.”

It was just second place. So, George didn’t think that it was anything worth bragging about.

Rhea did admire strength, but it was merely an admiration.

“You’re amazing,” she said, raising her bottle.

George raised a brow. “So? What was it you liked about him?”

That was a question Rhea had asked herself more times than she could count recently.

What was it about Carter that had such a hold on her? What part of him felt irreplaceable?

“Was it because he’s rich and good–looking? Charming, maybe?” George asked.

Rhea blinked again. Other people had those traits too.

“Or was it because he helped you when you were struggling? There’s nothing in this world that’s truly irreplaceable. Even DNA evolves.”

Rhea asked, “Is there anything you can’t let go of?”

“Not at the moment.”

The alcohol was starting to hit her. Rhea tilted her head and asked, “Then how come you’ve never dated anyone all these years? Even Nathan has had two girlfriends.”

“I have high standards.”

Rhea was rendered speechless.

“I’m serious. I have high standards,” George repeated.

“What kind of standards?”

“At the very least…” George looked at Rhea. “She has to be tall, smart, and have good character.”

“Looks don’t matter to you?” she asked.

George gave a realistic answer. “How many ugly people do you think are in this circle?”

They lived in a world of wealth and power.
