Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 217

Clive didn’t see any point in leaving now that he was here. He stepped inside, quietly shutting the door behind him.

He walked to the end of the hospital bed and studied Kristen’s pale face, his brows knitting together. “What happened?”

Kristen tried to brush it off with a weak smile. “It’s nothing...”

Cameron wasn’t having it. He shot her a glare, his voice sharp. “Nothing? Don’t play dumb. This is the same old problem you got back in college, all because of Clive. Now it’s come back, and you passed out on the sidewalk. If I hadn’t driven by when I did...” His words trailed off, the worry etched on his face.

He glanced at Kristen’s white-knuckled grip on the sheet and her colorless cheeks. In the end, he couldn’t bring himself to push her any further.

Clive stayed silent. The guilt from years ago still lingered—he knew he owed Kristen for what happened back then.

“How do you feel now?” His tone softened.

“I’m really fine. Don’t listen to Cameron,” Kristen said, giving Clive a reassuring smile. “Honestly, those meds Amelia made for me helped a lot.”

Clive glanced away, rubbing his nose in a rare display of awkwardness. Back in college, he’d asked Amelia to prepare those medications for two whole years, but he’d never told her they were for Kristen. He’d made up some other excuse.

“Clive, once this IV is done, I’ll be able to leave. Seriously, don’t mind Cameron—he’s overreacting. It was just low blood sugar. I’ll still make it to the West Medicine meeting tomorrow morning. You don’t have to stay. Go home early so Amelia doesn’t get upset,” Kristen said, her voice gentle.

Before Clive could answer, Cameron slammed his fruit knife down and cut in, cold and annoyed. “Amelia’s already shameless enough to hold onto the Mrs. Salmeron title. Now she can’t even stand Clive spending one night looking after a friend? What right does that country girl have to complain?”

“Cameron!” Clive shot him a warning look. “Amelia is my wife. Show some respect.”

Just then, Clive noticed the bruises on Cameron’s face. His eyes narrowed. “Did you get into a fight?”

Cameron rolled his eyes. “Some nutcase tried to run me over after work—swerved right at me out of nowhere.” He hesitated, feeling a bit guilty, but since Clive didn’t react, Amelia must not have told him about the close call at lunch.

But even if Amelia had complained, so what? Clive wasn’t the type to turn on his oldest friend over someone like her.

Seeing Cameron’s injuries weren’t serious, Clive let it go. He glanced at his watch, then at the IV drip. It looked like Kristen would need at least another hour.
