Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 226

Will had barely unbuckled his seatbelt when Kristen slammed on the brakes. The sudden stop sent his elbow crashing into the door, pain shooting up his arm and draining all the color from his usually handsome face.

He could actually hear something in his elbow shift with a sickening click.

“Will!” Kristen’s voice trembled as she looked over at him, her eyes turning red with guilt. “Are you okay? I’m so sorry—a cat ran out in front of us and I hit the brakes. I didn’t realize you’d already taken off your seatbelt. I’m so sorry, Will, I really didn’t see.”

“It’s fine. It’s not your fault.” Will gritted his teeth, sweat beading on his forehead as he tried to tough it out.

He’d been distracted, unbuckling his seatbelt because he thought he’d seen Amelia outside. That brief moment of carelessness had cost him.

“Let me take you to the hospital. You really should get checked out,” Kristen said, her worry obvious.

Will hesitated, then nodded. “Alright. I don’t think I can hang out with you today.”

Kristen gave him a gentle, understanding smile. “That’s okay. I just want to make sure you’re alright.”

Will tried to smile back, but it looked more like a grimace. Kristen leaned in, just a little too close, to buckle his seatbelt for him.

She was so near that Will caught the faint scent of her perfume.

He shifted away, pressing into the seat and trying to put some space between them. With his good hand, he moved the seat back a little further.

Kristen noticed, and for a split second her eyes flashed with something sharp, but her face smoothed out right away as she straightened up.

“Will, who did you see out there? You looked so rattled.”

“Just someone from my past. I must’ve been mistaken.”

Will clearly didn’t want to talk about it, but Kristen had seen the way his eyes flickered.

Even when they’d reunited after years apart, Will had only given her a polite smile. He’d never looked this shaken up.

Amelia.

Kristen cursed silently. That woman really knew how to leave an impression.

She dropped Will off at the nearest hospital, then drove straight back to West Medicine Tower.

Inside the lobby, Kristen scanned the room and quickly spotted Amelia in a corner, flipping through a stack of documents, totally focused.

Before Kristen could do anything, a woman walked by—her clothes plain and a little shabby, eyes red from crying, clutching a cardboard box like she’d just been fired.

Kristen’s lips curled into a sly smile. She walked up and grabbed the woman’s hand.

Their eyes met. The woman looked confused, but Kristen only tightened her grip and whispered, “Want to make some quick cash before you go?”
