Clive felt a rush of guilt, heavy and sharp.
“Mom, please, just stop,” Kristen said, her voice barely above a whisper. “This isn’t Clive’s fault. I chose this. He’s always been good to me. Always looked out for me.”
She was still trying to protect him, even now.
Clive pressed his lips together, unsure what to say.
“Fine. I can’t control who you love, but I won’t let anyone blame my daughter for something she didn’t do,” Bianca snapped, her voice tight with anger. “I went to see that crazy woman, Liliana. After her meds kicked in, she finally calmed down. She told me straight up—yesterday at lunch, Amelia went to see her, and together they planned everything that happened today. All just to set you up! And you, Kristen, you ran out to save her, only for Clive to think you were some manipulative woman.”
Clive felt like he’d just been hit by a truck.
He stood there, stunned, the truth crashing down on him.
Amelia really orchestrated all this?
Kristen was the one who’d been wronged.
Kristen glanced quickly at the door, her face unreadable, then looked away.
“Mom, don’t say things like that. Amelia… she wouldn’t do something like this to me, would she?”
“Why not? Do you know how scary jealousy can be? When a woman gets jealous, there’s nothing she won’t do. The doctors and nurses saw it all. If you don’t believe me, just go ask them! Too bad Liliana’s out of her mind. No one will take her word for it...” Bianca let out a heavy sigh.
Right then, the hospital room door swung open.
Clive walked in, tall and tense.
“Mrs. Watts,” he greeted quietly, unable to meet Bianca’s eyes.
She let out a cold snort. “Mr. Salmeron, my daughter is the heart of our family. We’ve spoiled her since she was born, and she’s suffered enough with you. Did you forget what you promised me? You said Kristen saved your life, that you’d take care of her. Is this what you call taking care of her?”
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Watts.” Clive lowered his head, his gaze lingering on Kristen’s wrist, wrapped tight in bandages. Guilt twisted in his chest.
“Mom, that’s enough. Isn’t Dad flying back tonight? If you don’t head to the airport, you’re going to miss him,” Kristen said, tugging at her mom’s sleeve, trying to lighten the mood.
Bianca sighed, exasperated. “Alright, alright. I can never win with you.”
She grabbed her purse and, before leaving, looked Clive straight in the eye.
