“Huh?” Emmery blinked, still catching up.
“Don’t just stand there! Move!” Diego snapped, way past patience.
This was Amelia, after all. Opportunities like this didn’t come around twice.
Maybe the people here didn’t know her story, but back in the day, Amelia was the prodigy every department fought over. All the big names in academia wanted her as their protégé.
If Diego hadn’t been stuck overseas back then, he would’ve gone head to head with Dr. Borgen for her, no question.
And on top of that…
Diego’s expression turned thoughtful. He remembered: when it came to lab work, Amelia was a genius. Her results had always been more precise than anything the AI could spit out.
If they could get her on the team…
Just thinking about it made Diego grin. He couldn’t help but chuckle out loud.
“Dr. Wade, what’s so funny?” Susie asked, looking at him, confused.
He coughed, waving her off. “Nothing. Just remembered something good.”
Meanwhile—
Amelia walked to the curb, waiting for her ride, when a young man approached.
“Ms. Sadinton.”
Amelia’s guard went up, but she recognized him from earlier—one of the guys with Dr. Borgen.
“Yeah? Can I help you?”
“I’m Emmery, Dr. Wade’s student. Uh… could I maybe get your contact info?” He hurried to explain, “Dr. Wade asked me to. We’re here for a meeting with Dr. Borgen about a government project, but we’re stuck on a few key issues. Dr. Wade was hoping, if you’re available—”
“Sure.” Amelia didn’t even let him finish. If she could help Dr. Borgen, she’d always make time.
She pulled out her phone. “Here, add me on Messenger.”
“Thanks.” Emmery quickly scanned her info, sneaking another look at her. “Ms. Sadinton, we actually started our PhDs around the same time. I’ve heard about you for years. Always hoped I’d get a chance to collaborate.”
Amelia smiled. “Don’t expect too much. I’ve got a five-year gap on my CV.”
“You took a break?” Emmery asked, curious.
She looked down, a small, wry smile tugging at her lips as memories flashed by—five years barely surviving in bed.
“I was in hell. Died and fought my way back,” she said quietly.
Her ride pulled up. Amelia waved. “I’ve got to go.”
