Now that she was finally regretting asking him for a divorce, maybe it wasn’t too late to turn things around.
He’d already hit her with the harsh words; now it was time to reel her back in with something sweet.
Clive smiled, his tone suddenly gentle. “Amelia, if you’re starting to regret the divor—”
She cut him off without missing a beat, her voice like ice. “The only thing I regret is wasting my youth on a loser like you. Honestly, I’d rather have thrown those years away to the dogs than spent them with you.”
Every word from Amelia was flat and numb, each syllable echoing with a cold, dead finality.
“I kept telling myself if I could love you, I could handle losing you. But now, I just regret it so much. How could I have thrown away the best years of my life on someone like you?”
Clive’s smug smile vanished, his whole face tightening with anger. “Amelia!”
The call ended with a sharp beep.
Clive’s grip on his phone tightened so hard his knuckles turned white. Furious, he kicked the cabinet beside him.
Meanwhile, in the kids’ room, Timmy sat at Penny’s bedside, holding her small hand in his. He was clearly tired, but he forced himself to stay up and keep her company.
“Timmy…” Penny slipped her tiny hand out from under the covers to touch his cheek, her eyes full of guilt. “I’m sorry I kept you up. What if you fall asleep in class tomorrow?”
She’d heard the teachers at Little Red House were strict, no-nonsense types.
“It’s fine,” Timmy whispered. “Even if I doze off, I’ll still get first place.” He looked at her, voice soft. “Penny, tell me—why were you so scared tonight?”
They were twins, and sometimes Timmy could sense what Penny was feeling. He could tell she was really scared, even if she didn’t say it out loud.
But Penny just shook her head, refusing to explain.
Timmy thought for a moment, then tried a different approach.
“If you don’t want to talk, how about I guess? If I get it right, just nod, okay?”
