Amelia spotted a rough, freshly bandaged wound on Ryan’s neck. She could’ve sworn it hadn’t been there when they first walked in.
Before she could get a word out, Ryan’s expression shifted. His eyes went cold as he stared past her at someone coming in behind.
Amelia turned automatically. A man in a sharp suit stood in the doorway, looking every bit the part—confident, sophisticated, the kind of polished that comes from old money. There was something about him that made her pause, a flicker of recognition she couldn’t place.
He met Amelia’s eyes, smiled politely, and said, “Ms. Sadinton. We meet again.”
She barely had time to react before Ryan stepped between them, blocking her view, his presence practically daring the newcomer to get any closer.
The man didn’t seem bothered. He just nodded at Ryan, still smiling. “Mr. Packman.”
Ryan’s voice was icy. “Andrew, take your client home.”
Amelia guessed the stranger was connected to the Packman family. She knew she shouldn’t stick around and quietly followed Andrew outside to his car.
From the passenger seat, she looked back and caught a glimpse of Ryan getting into a black SUV with the other man.
“That guy’s George’s right-hand man. Paxton,” Andrew said, glancing at her as he started the engine.
“George?” Amelia echoed, surprised. “As in the Packman family’s—?”
“The official heir.” Andrew’s tone was hard to read, almost careful.
Suddenly, it clicked. Amelia remembered where she’d seen Paxton before—he was the one who’d stopped her outside The Hollow Beat that night, the one who’d said someone wanted to meet her. Was that someone George?
