The kids who always act the most mature are usually the ones who end up hurting themselves the most.
She couldn’t even imagine how much little Timmy had already learned to keep bottled up inside.
Timmy glanced back at the glass display case filled with trophies and medals, each one stamped with “First Place.” Did he really have to live up to everyone’s expectations?
But that wasn’t what his dad and the others had taught him.
“Mom…” Timmy pressed his tiny hand to the glass, his voice barely above a whisper. “You have to take good care of yourself.”
Amelia froze, her eyes burning. Then Timmy went on, “I’ll try to grow up faster. I’m really strong, you know. I’ll protect you. Okay, okay, I’m super tired now. Goodnight.”
He wasn’t good at saying emotional stuff. After blurting it out, he got embarrassed and quickly tried to move on.
Amelia’s tears slipped down her cheeks. Her voice was shaky as she whispered, “Goodnight, sweetheart. Mommy loves you.”
That night, Amelia was completely wiped out.
She rushed through washing up, took a quick shower, and crashed into bed.
She dreamed of Penny running toward her, arms wide open. But just as Amelia was about to catch her, Penny’s happy face fell. Disappointment clouded her eyes as she said, “You’re not Momma Kristen. I don’t want you!”
The alarm went off, dragging Amelia out of the dream. The ache from it lingered as she woke.
She rubbed her face and forced herself out of bed to get ready for the day.
She threw together a simple breakfast, scrolling through news about the Salmeron family while she ate.
Just as she’d expected, the Salmerons were pouring money into PR, flooding the internet with positive stories and every good deed they’d ever done, trying to save face.
But it wasn’t working. They could bury other scandals, but Nathan’s company, Vanguard Media, was relentless, putting them on blast at every turn. Nathan had more than enough money, and honestly, nobody wanted to annoy the Morris family just to help the Salmerons out.
Cloudcrest’s stock price dropped as soon as the markets opened.
The timing was perfect.
