Penny just stood there, frozen.
If she picked Momma Kristen, would that mean losing her real mom?
But just last night, Momma Kristen had pulled her aside and apologized for being so harsh. She said it was only because she loved Penny so much and was afraid Amelia would take her away. Momma Kristen had cried so hard, her whole body shaking.
“Penny, sweetheart, you’re like my own daughter. I never want to lose you...”
Penny had promised her right then—she swore she’d never leave.
Now, Amelia could see the hesitation on her daughter’s face.
She didn’t want to push Penny, and she definitely didn’t want to keep torturing herself. Amelia set the towel down, turned, and walked away.
“Mom...” Penny called out, reaching for her, her voice small and pleading.
But this time, Amelia didn’t come back for her like she always did. She just glanced over her shoulder and said, “The stool isn’t that high. You can get down on your own.”
So Penny had to hop off by herself. She was so little, her feet barely touched the floor. By the time she hurried to the dining room, Amelia was already sitting at the table.
There was an empty seat right next to her.
Penny hesitated, staring at Amelia with wide, hopeful eyes. She waited for her mom to call her over.
But Amelia acted like she couldn’t even feel Penny’s stare. She just kept ladling soup into a bowl for Mrs. Salmeron.
Penny’s lips trembled. Feeling a little hurt, she turned and ran to Clive’s side. “Daddy, can I sit with you?”
The whole meal, Amelia only talked to Mrs. Salmeron. She didn’t even glance at Clive or Penny, not once.
Clive noticed. He could handle Amelia ignoring him—he probably deserved it. But Penny? That was her own daughter. Was Amelia seriously giving her the cold shoulder just because she liked Kristen more? Penny was only five. Of course she was closer to Kristen after all these years together. Was Amelia really jealous of her own child?
Clive’s frown deepened as he ate.
When dinner was almost over, he nodded at the maid, who picked Penny up and took her outside to play.
This conversation wasn’t meant for the dining room.
He and Amelia followed Mrs. Salmeron into her study, where she liked to drink tea.
