The air was thick with the scent of damask roses.
Clive pressed his lips together, feeling something bitter twist inside him.
All those years with Amelia, she almost never wore perfume. She knew he didn’t like all those fancy scents—he’d told her so more than once.
Trying to sound casual, he asked, “So, what were you and…” He paused, catching himself, then said, “What were you and Amelia talking about?”
Aiden kept his focus on the road, answering honestly, “Oh, nothing much. I just thanked Ms. Sadinton for hiring me back then. She told me to keep working hard. Said making it to executive assistant wasn’t easy, and that Cloudcrest is one of the top companies in the industry. She said there’s a lot of room for me to grow.”
Clive distracted himself by scrolling through his social feed, pretending he didn’t care. “Did she mention me?”
Aiden hesitated.
Amelia had mentioned Clive, but what she’d really said was, “Clive might be your boss and honestly, he’s not the most capable, but at least he pays well. Just stick around, get experience, make your resume look good, and use this job as a springboard. That’s your best move.”
Clive waited a few seconds. When he didn’t hear anything, he looked up and caught Aiden’s eyes in the rearview mirror.
Aiden quickly looked away, focusing on the intersection ahead, and said in a serious tone, “Ms. Sadinton did mention you.”
Clive’s grip on his phone tightened. He pressed on, “What did she say about me?” He could tell Aiden was nervous, so he tried to sound reassuring. “Just be honest, I won’t get mad.”
Yeah, right. There was no way Aiden would actually say what Amelia had told him. He hadn’t found a new job yet—why risk everything by telling the truth?
Without missing a beat, Aiden replied, “Ms. Sadinton said you’re a really good boss and that I should stick with you. She also mentioned your stomach isn’t great and told me to look out for you.”
Clive didn’t say anything, but his expression softened a little.
