Timmy couldn’t figure out what was up with his little sister. He reached out and gently ruffled her hair, hoping to calm her down.
Amelia’s voice came through his headphones.
“Timmy, your dad and I need to talk about some things. Once we’ve worked it all out, I’ll let you and Penny know, okay?”
The divorce was between her and Clive. No matter how messy things got, she refused to drag the kids into it or leave them with any scars.
“Okay,” Timmy answered quietly. He glanced down, biting his lip, then spoke up, “Mom…”
“Yes?” she replied, her voice soft.
Timmy’s words came out in a whisper. “I support you. I know Dad hasn’t treated you right. No one else in the family has, either…”
Penny didn’t have a clue what was going on, and even if she heard bits and pieces, she’d never really get it.
But Timmy was different.
All the adults tried to hide the Salmeron family drama from him, but he was a computer whiz. If he wanted to know something, he’d always find a way.
When Amelia heard her son’s words, her eyes stung. She almost started crying right there.
She held it together, forcing herself to sound calm. “Thank you, sweetheart. Don’t worry about me. I can take care of myself, and from now on, I’ll take care of you and Penny too.”
“Okay… I have to go. We’re almost at the competition venue.”
“Alright, honey. Good luck. I can’t wait to hear how it goes.”
“Bye, Mom.”
