“Susie, don’t get me wrong. I just think you’re every bit as talented as Amelia.”

Kristen stepped a little closer and gently rested her hand on Susie’s arm.

Susie glanced down at Kristen’s hand but didn’t shake her off. That alone was enough to show she was at least listening.

Looks like she’d picked the right person.

Susie’s eyes narrowed, sharp and clear. “So what, Kristen? You want me to help you take down Amelia? Planning to use me as your weapon? You really think you’re that smart?”

Kristen didn’t even blink. She just smiled. “I wouldn’t call it ‘using.’ I think we’d make great partners.”

She took out her phone and scrolled through a few photos, holding them out for Susie to see.

“I just ran into them by the break room before I came down,” Kristen said.

On the screen, Amelia and Robert were standing close together, laughing at something only they knew.

Susie pressed her lips together, her jaw tight.

Kristen caught the jealousy on Susie’s face and smiled knowingly.

She’d noticed it in the meeting earlier—the way Susie looked at Robert. She’d been right all along.

“Amelia’s single now, Susie. She and Robert are together at work all the time. Who knows what could happen?” Kristen’s hand slid onto Susie’s shoulder, her voice smooth and persuasive. “You really want to keep letting Amelia outshine you? Even with the guy you like?”

Susie didn’t answer.

Kristen could tell she’d hit a nerve, but she didn’t push it. Instead, she slipped a beautifully carved wooden box and her business card into Susie’s hand.

“Think it over. If you want to team up, you know how to find me. Just a little gift—something I collected myself. You can’t buy it anywhere.”

With that, Kristen turned and walked away.

Susie watched her leave, then opened the box in her hand. Inside was a crystal-clear red amber gourd, small but obviously expensive.

She picked it up and studied it, her lips curling into a cool, unreadable smile.

Turning away, Susie headed to a spot just out of the view of the security cameras. She pulled out her phone and sent a quick message.
