Chapter 53
GOD POV
The autumn wind swept through Portano, carrying the salty scent of the harbor and the essence of winter.
Despite the chill, this international port city remained vibrant–streets illuminated, waters reflecting dazzling lights, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that attracted numerous tourists even during the off–season.
A certain espresso café in Portano was equally lively, breeding gossip and rumors, along with some–colder and more cutting than the wind–mockery. sarcasm, and scheming.
Just like those two inconspicuous women in the corner.
Camila handed a scarf–the same model as the one Alia had bought–to Berti: “Cousin, it’s getting cold. I specially picked this for you. It’s a limited edition from this brand; only six in the entire city.”
Berti glanced at the logo on the scarf, her brow slightly furrowed, and didn’t reach out to take it. “You just changed jobs and don’t have much money. Why are you wasting it like this?”
“You’ve helped me a lot when I was at Cortes Tech, and I haven’t given you anything. Consider this a small token of my appreciation. Camila spoke with casual flattery, pushing the scarf a bit closer to Berti.
Berti eyed the expensive scarf but didn’t take it, responding coolly, “Just tell me directly if you need my help. I’m your cousin. Your parents entrusted you to me, and I’ll do my best to help you if I can.”
She knew Camila too well; if there wasn’t something she needed help with, Camila would never spend this kind of money on her. The scarf looked light, but accepting it might come with unseen weight.
Berti’s response was rigid, and her refusal to take the scarf made Camila feel awkward. She forced a smile and said, “You know, I was fired from Cortes Tech all because of that bitch Alia…”
Mentioning Alia, Camila’s voice turned venomous, her smile transforming into a grimace. “If she hadn’t been plotting behind my back, how could I have ended up like this!”
Berti had anticipated Camila would bring up her dismissal but hadn’t expected her to still blame others for her own mistakes. She sighed inwardly and said coldly, “Although I don’t interact much with the business department, I know Alia well enough. She’s not someone who stirs up trouble. As for why you were fired, only you know the truth.”
As Camila’s cousin, Berti would usually look out for her at work, but when it came to right and wrong, she stood firmly on the side of justice.
“Cousin, what you see is just that woman’s facade. You don’t know how shameless she is.” Camila looked around and lowered her voice. “Back in Monterano, she was thrown out by her family for seducing her soon–to–be brother–in–law.”
These were private matters from the past, and without witnessing them firsthand, who could truly understand the complexities? Berti didn’t want to engage with Camila’s gossip.
Seeing Berti’s silence, Camila assumed she had swayed her and continued, “Think about it–even her own family rejected her. Who knows how rotten she is and what she’s done behind closed doors…”
“Is this why you asked me to come here? To talk about these things?” Berti suddenly cut off Camila’s words. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving.
With that, Berti stood up to leave.
Seeing this, Camila quickly grabbed Berti’s arm. /Cousin, wait!”
Camila hurriedly took out her phone and showed Berti a photo she had secretly taken a couple of days ago, smirking. “Look, cousin. I’m not slandering her. This woman knows Mr. Vittorio is married, yet she’s still trying to seduce him.”
Berti glanced at the photo, which showed a man and woman holding hands. The man was tall and handsome, the woman slender and elegant.

The woman was gazing into the distance, her eyes bright, while the man’s gaze seemed fixed on her, an if studying her not rudity, but with a gentle and delicate intensity that was mesmerizing.
Seeing this photo, Berti was indeed surprised, not for any other reason, but because this was the first time she realized that someone as stoof as Vanen could have such a look in his eyes, and that Alia beside him could be so heautiful.
Noticing Berti’s momentary pause, Camila thought she had made progress and quickly added, “Cousin, I have more material here. If you just send these to the Cortes Tech company internal email, letting everyone see her true face, do you think Mr. Vittorio would still want her? Would that that still have the nerve to stay in the company?”
Berti snapped out of her surprise, sighed deeply, and shook her head. “Camila, these are other people’s private lives. It’s not our business.”
At this point, Camila was so fixated on targeting Alia that she couldn’t hear anything else. Berti’s second refusal filled her with resentment and indignation. She tightened her grip on Berti’s hand. “Cousin, only you can help me now. This is such a simple thing for you. Why won’t you help me?
When she was fired, Berti hadn’t helped her, and now she wouldn’t even do this small favor. It was too much.
This time, Berti firmly shook her head, pulled her hand away from Camila, and turned to pick up her bag from the chair.
Seeing Berti about to leave again, Camila stomped her foot in anger and blurted out, “Whose cousin are you, for fuck’s sake?”
Berti paused, looked back at her with cold eyes as if she were a stranger, and said, “I won’t help you with this. Let me give you one last piece of advice: stop doing foolish things. Focus on your work–that’s the path you should take
Watching Berti’s retreating figure, Camila trembled with rage, her once pretty face now distorted with fury, resembling a vampire.
Now, Berti was her only hope. If she wouldn’t help, what other way could Camila find to drive Alia out of Cortes Tech?
That day at the mall, seeing Alia and Marco so sweet and loving, Camila had resolved that no matter the cost, she would make Alia suffer.
There was no reason why Alia should have everything. What was so great about her? She was just focused on work, boring as death, pretending to be righteous while who knows what filthy things she did behind closed doors? Why did everyone help her? Who did she think she was!
“Miss Camila, if Berti won’t help you, I can.”
Just as Camila felt the whole world was against her, a gentle voice sounded behind her. She turned around, momentarily stunned, but quickly regained her composure and smirked, “It’s you.”
