Chapter 85
I forced a smile and said, “I’ve made plans to meet someone at noon to discuss something. Can we go for a walk later?”
“Mm.” Marco nodded, not saying much, then turned to look out the window again.
Seeing Marco’s lonely silhouette, I suddenly felt a pang of guilt and added, “I’m just going to talk with that person. It won’t take long.”
My purpose for agreeing to meet Maria was simple: to ask about Mom’s condition. I didn’t intend to chat much with Maria.
Marco turned back, a flicker of emotion in his deep eyes. “After lunch, shall I go with you?”
His tone was consultative, waiting for my response.
I’m going to meet Maria, and instinctively, I didn’t want Marco to come along.
Marco is my present, my future. I’ll handle my past cleanly on my own. I absolutely can’t drag him into this mess and stain him with its filth.
But I couldn’t bear to refuse Marco either. I was torn, unsure how to respond, when Marco said, “Let’s have lunch first. I’ll drive you there afterward.”
Last night’s charity banquet could be described as a gathering of all the prominent figures in Portano City. Yet, Gabriel was thrown out.
Even though no media was present at the charity banquet, the incident quickly spread within the circle and reached Gabriel’s ears.
It wasn’t exactly that it reached his ears–rather, he had someone look into it. He cared deeply about what those high–society figures thought of him from last night.
Upon inquiring, he indeed heard unfavorable news. Many said he lacked manners, class, and courtesy. Most importantly, they said he had offended the Godfather of the Black Hawk Council.
Last night was the first time in Gabriel’s twenty–something years of life that he had been so humiliated, and in front of so many people, no less.
Such a scene would be unbearable for anyone, let alone Gabriel.
The more he thought about it, the angrier Gabriel became. He was like a fireball, ready to explode at any moment.
Loren rushed in, shouting as he ran, “Young Master, something’s wrong! Something big has happened!”
Gabriel snapped irritably, “Why are you panicking? What kind of big thing could it be?”
Loren handed the Portano City morning newspaper to Gabriel, ”
, the Verona family is actually stepping in to collaborate with Cortez Tech.”
“The Verona family?” Gabriel grabbed the newspaper and quickly scanned it, furious. “What the hell is Jess Verona trying to do?”
The Castro family is one of the top families in Montralano, while the Verona family is a major player in the South. In Gabriel’s view, if the Black Hawk Council were to choose a partner, it would most likely be between their two families.
Over the years, the Castro and Verona families have collaborated. Though not exactly friends, they’ve maintained a partnership.
Why would Jess Verona choose this moment to meddle in his dealings with Cortez Tech? What capability does that small company, Cortez Tech, even have?
Could it be that Jess Verona is trying to show his magnanimity at this time, hoping to catch the eye of the Black Hawk Godfather and increase the chances of collaboration between Black Hawk and the Verona family?
As he was mulling over this, Gabriel’s phone rang. Just by the ringtone, he knew it was his old man calling.
He took a deep breath before answering Father
Chapter 85
“You worthless brat! What kind of nonsense have you been stirring up in Portano City lately? If you’ve got nothing better to do, why are you causing trouble? Get your ass back here right now…”
Before Gabriel could even speak, he was berated mercilessly.
