Not many people came to Sylvia’s funeral, and everyone was weighed down by a heavy heart.
No one had expected her to end her life so quietly and without a trace.
After all, not long ago, most people had seen her, shared meals and conversations with her. At that time, she seemed perfectly normal, showing no sign whatsoever of suicidal thoughts.
The coffin was empty–there was neither a body nor ashes, not even a piece of clothing to remember her by. It was filled to the brim with yellow and white chrysanthemums.
Only a fourteen–inch portrait placed on the altar could prove who the protagonist of this funeral was.
The cold and desolate scene surprised everyone, and inevitably, they all came to ask questions.
“We just wanted to come and say goodbye to Syl. Was the body cremated? What about the ashes?”
“Couldn’t you bring some of the clothes or belongings she used in life?”
Faced with their questions, Adrien’s face was deathly pale, and he couldn’t utter a single word.
After all these years together, he hadn’t kept anything related to her.
Even the portrait was the only thing he had brought back from Dignitas.
Looking at the calm and serene face in the photo, he couldn’t help but recall what had happened on the day it was tak-en.
If only he had cared a little more about her that day, would he have known she was closing her accounts? Would he have realized she had taken a black–and–white memorial photo?
It was only when things had become truly irreparable that Adrien finally understood what he had done.
He thought he had hidden his unspeakable little secrets well enough that Sylvia would never notice.
But after so many years together, they knew each other so well that even a blink of an eye could reveal what the other was thinking.
He neglected her in every way, leaving her behind again and again, even laughing and chatting with other women right in front of her.
How could she possibly not feel it?
She knew everything, and had always been waiting for him to confess.
