Chapter113.
Marus
“How could this happen? How did it all go so wrong? You were the picture of a loving couple, the cherished little princess he adored. Why did it end like this? Why give up the empire you built for that mistress, just because she can get pregnant?”
I patted Abrial gently, handed her a tissue, and then forced a smile. “I don’t care anymore, so why should you be sad, Abrial? It’s fine. Besides, now you have more time to go home and see your grandkids.”
She looked momentarily confused, and I flashed her a quick, playful face before continuing on my way.
The faces around me, many with red-rimmed eyes, were a study in mixed emotions. Some had watched me grow up, others had fought alongside my parents, and a few were even Leland’s confidants.
However, I understood the complex emotions in their eyes.
I could feel countless eyes fixed on my back, unable to fathom why I walked with such an air of calm, hands tucked behind my back, even hopping slightly as I made my way toward Leland’s CEO office.
To them, it must have seemed utterly bizarre; they must have thought I’d lost my mind.
From a distance, I overheard the assistant reporting to Leland.
“It’s true! Ms. Perez was hopping along, looking completely unfazed, like nothing ever happened. I wonder if she’s gone crazy? Doesn’t she know about Ms. Hoffman and you?”
Leland shook his head, dismissive. “That’s impossible. Unless she no longer loves me. Wait, was my medical record really tampered with by Dr. Sheppard? Could I have been drugged these past few days, feeling dizzy? Am I truly not sick?” Leland looked to the assistant, who nodded grimly. Then, he frowned, puzzled.”What could Dr. Sheppard possibly be aiming for? Have we found no trace of him yet?”
The assistant replied with quiet respect.
“Dr. Sheppard appears to have vanished completely; we’ve found no trace of him. As for Ms. Perez, she’s dealt with her three hospitals, donating one to the state and selling the other two. On other matters… progress remains stalled.”
They were still speaking when I knocked softly and entered.
