Chapter 62
Kicking off my slippers, I leaned back against the headboard. “Nothing much. After watching her livestream today, Mom suddenly decided Claire was a misunderstood good girl. So she brought her home, hoping we’d resolve our misunderstanding, let bygones be bygones, and be good friends again. Just like before.”
“What the heck?! Are you sure Mom’s… okay?” Marissa exclaimed, sounding genuinely baffled, then added, “You think she skipped her last health checkup or something?”
Her reaction was exactly what I expected from any sane person-finding the idea absurd.
Who asks a victim to reconcile with their bully? Or a wife with the mistress?
I chuckled.
“So what did you say to that?” she pressed. “You didn’t actually agree, did you?”
I lifted my hand and checked my nails before answering casually, “I agreed.”
On the other end, there was silence. Then her voice came through, softer this time. “Are you… okay?”
A sly grin tugged at my lips.
“Although I agreed, no one said I actually have to forgive her. Think of it as a way to get them off my back. Being hounded is a real pain.”
“Now you’re talking!” Marissa exclaimed, excitement bubbling in her voice. “I was seriously worried you’d fall for it again. Fortunately, you’ve changed. You’re not as gullible as you used to be.”
I didn’t know what to say to that since it wasn’t exactly a compliment, so I stayed silent. She did too.
Moments later, Marissa broke it. “About the viral clip, the livestream, and that scumbag’s post…”
I stiffened. “Yes?”

“Julian and I are already aware of it. I was going to step in immediately, but he stopped me.”
My stomach clenched.
He stopped her? Why?
Did he think I didn’t deserve their help?
The thought simmered, persistently.
But before my doubts could spiral too far, Marissa’s voice cut through.
“He said the current you would rather handle it yourself than have everything handed to you on a silver platter. And honestly, I agreed. It felt like a good way to train you-to strengthen your independence.”
The relief that rushed in was dizzying.
In less than a minute, it felt as though I’d plummeted from heaven to hell… only to find myself climbing back up again.
LILITH
Sensing my silence, Marissa asked hesitantly, “Do you think we’re being too indifferent?”
Snapping out of my thoughts, I answered unhurriedly, “No, you were right. I would indeed like to handle this myself.”
She sighed audibly. “I’m glad to know that. For a second, I worried we made the wrong call.”
I smiled, a sincere one. “Rest assured, you didn’t.”
All of a sudden, her voice dropped into a whisper, conspiratorial.
“Don’t worry though. Julian and I have been talking to the attendees of the banquet. If you ever need them to speak up, just tell me and I’ll get it done. We’ve also been digging-”
“Marissa,” a voice cut in from her end, low and oppressive. I instantly recognized it.
Julian.
“You’re in Julian’s office?” I asked knowingly.
“Yes, but I gotta go now before he kills me with this deadly stare of his,” she said

mischievously.
Jealousy pricked at me. At their effortless bond which was like second nature. While I… I was like an only child, forever on the outside.
“I’m hanging up now,” Marissa said after a pause. “And remember what I said. Don’t forget to ask for our help if you ever need it.”
I nodded, then remembered she couldn’t see it. “Got it. I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Okay, I’ve got to run. Talk to you later, baby sis.” She hung up before I could reply.
Lying in bed, I stared at the ceiling until sleep blurred my vision.
How nice would it be… if I could one day be as close to the twins as they were to each other.
The next day, I woke late-closer to noon than morning.
The first thing I did upon waking up was grab my phone to check the situation online.
Compared to yesterday’s frenzy, the feedback online had visibly been contained.
