While I waited for Dean to call back, I browsed online for trusted banks where I could open a new

account.

The very first to be crossed off the list was the one I’d used before–the account now frozen, tethered to my parents like a leash. I wanted nothing more to do with them, not even remotely.

I went through review after review, compared features, weighed pros and cons, and narrowed down my options.

In the end, I settled on what seemed like the second–best choice–the first, ironically, being the very bank I had just abandoned.

Fortunately, times had changed, and opening an account no longer required walking inside a bank’s physical office.

Everything could be done online with a personal ID, proof of residence, and a quick KYC video call.

I was just about to begin the process when Dean’s call finally came through…

Like I said before, asking Lilith to dig up more dirt on Brandon had only been a way to keep her occupied.

But when I opened the attachment she sent, I was shocked despite myself.

Even with Callum’s connections, we’d only managed to uncover the construction site cover–up. Yet in her files, there wasn’t just that–there was more.

Much more.

Deeper. Dirtier.

The kind of filth you don’t stumble on by accident. She hadn’t just looked–she had known exactly what and where to look.

I was still lost in thought when Callum’s voice cut in behind me.

“What’s got you frowning so hard?”

I turned around, surprised at his presence. “The meeting’s over already?”

He shrugged out of his coat and hung it up with practiced ease before dropping into the seat beside me.

“Over, yes. Productive? Not even close. A complete waste of time.” His tone carried unmistakable

irritation

I smirked faintly. I could relate all too well.

“So?” he pressed, leaning over. “What’s got you so absorbed that you didn’t even hear me come in?”

There was no need to hide it from him since we were in this together, so without a word, I handed him my phone.

“Lilith sent this.”

Something in my voice must have alerted him–it was enough to erase the teasing look from his face.

He took the phone, his brows furrowing as he scrolled.

A few moments later, he set it down and gave me a slow, appreciative smile.

“Your darling is impressive.”

I ignored the deliberate wording, though it stirred something in me anyway.

“But she’s supposed to be just a sheltered girl,” I muttered. “Objectively speaking, she shouldn’t be able to dig up something this big. Even with your vast network, it would’ve taken us days to pull all this together.”

Callum arched a brow. “Dean, everyone has secrets. You, of all people, should know that.”

I didn’t rise to it. Instead, I took the phone back and dialed Lilith’s number, returning her call just

as I’d promised.

She picked up almost immediately.

“Did you read through it? What do you think? Was it helpful?”

“More than helpful,” I admitted.

Her voice brightened. “That’s good to know.”

“But…” I kept my tone light and casual. “How did you manage to pull all this together? This is no

ordinary feat.

She didn’t even hesitate. “I was Brandon’s fiancée for years, after all. Of course I know things most people wouldn’t.”

It was a reasonable explanation.

And yet, I couldn’t shake the sense that she was holding something back. That there was a deeper reason behind this.

Something she wasn’t telling me.

But like Callum had said–everyone has secrets. Maybe this was another one of hers.

Just like the real reason she’d once tried to push me away despite the mutual attraction between
