Chapter 81
This wasn’t the Brandon I knew. This was a man standing on the brink, one breath away from snapping completely.
In that instant. I knew I couldn’t provoke him.
Forcing a smile, I steadied my voice.
“Why are you still keeping me in suspense? Just tell me already.”
Before I could make sense o what was going on, his hands abruptly released mine. Then, one slid around my waist, pulling me close; the other lifted my chin with a disturbing gentleness.
But there was no tenderness in it. No warmth. Only a creeping chill that spread through me.
When his fingers caressed my cheek, the previous sensation returned full force–like a serpent tightening its coils.
“You and I, Claire,” Brandon murmured as he leaned close, his voice low, “…have always been in this together. Our situations are nearly identical. Even how we ended up in the homes we grew up in–maybe that’s why we were drawn to each other in the first place.”
He spoke with a conviction that unsettled me.
“Only with each other can we show our true selves without fear. I know you’re not the graceful, sweet–tempered socialite you pretend to be. And you know I’m no perfect gentleman.”
I frowned. Yes, those words were true, but—
“Why are you suddenly saying this?”
Instead of answering, he caught my earlobe between his teeth. A shiver rippled through me, yet I could feel no pleasure, only confusion and a rising sense of terror.
“I’m reminding you that in this relationship, neither of us can survive alone. If one goes down, the other follows. After all, we know too many of each other’s secrets.”
I froze, then a deep, cold dread seeped into my bones.
”
He wasn’t just confiding in me. He’d sensed my evasion and was threatening me. Making it clear

The bad feeling in my chest solidified. Whatever his plan was, it was definitely nothing good.
But what choice did I have?
I steadied myself and forced calmness.
“Fine. I’ll help. Now–tell me what it is.”
His arm tightened around my waist, pulling me closer until our faces hovered an inch apart.
“Don’t worry,” he whispered. “This time, it’s nothing complicated.”
His
eyes gleamed as he delivered the words that made my blood run cold.
“I just want to claim… her body.”
CLAIRE
“What?!” My eyes widened in shock as I realized what he was implying.
“You want to… to…”
I couldn’t bring myself to utter those four damning letters.
As if he had just suggested something perfectly normal, Brandon smiled faintly. “You also think it’s a good idea, right? After all, it’s the fastest way to get her family to agree to marry her off to me.”
Fastest method, my foot. I screamed inwardly.
Yes, I hated Lilith. Hated her privileged yet whiny existence.
But even so–even if I wasn’t a saint–helping a man ruin another woman like that? That was a line I didn’t think I could cross.
Suddenly, he laughed, though the sound held no trace of humor.
“Don’t tell me you can’t bring yourself to do it? Isn’t it a little late to act like a kind soul now?”
I didn’t answer and pressed my lips into a thin line.
Unexpectedly, his hand shot out and clamped around my throat in the next second. My breath caught as his face hardened.
