In the end. I convinced myself it was because Lilith had discovered the affair. That it was normal for her emotions to be unstable after discovering such betrayal.
Later, from the stats, I saw her emotional value for me remained at 80.
Which meant-
She didn’t hate me. And as long as it didn’t fall, I could still siphon her luck.
So why couldn’t she just stay where she belonged and make things easy for me?!
A movement snapped me from my thoughts.
Brandon had stood, pacing the room agitatedly. He tugged at his tie, jaw clenching as a hand raked through his hair.
“All my plans depended on her being under her parents‘ control. But now she’s trying to slip away.”
“If she succeeds, even if public favor sways to my side, what use is it? They can’t tie a noose around her neck and drag her to the altar!”
Watching him rant, his face twisted, a chilling thought suddenly struck me.
If Brandon was only Lilith’s fiancé because I stole her luck… then with her full luck intact, would he have ever even qualified to stand at her side?
CLAIRE
Yet this was the same man I’d chosen.
A man I had lost almost everything trying to cling to.
Before we were exposed at the banquet, I’d felt smugly satisfied at having snatched him from Lilith, at proving he was mine.
But after everything that’s happened, it’s as if a thin veil has finally been torn from my eyes, and I can now see him for what he truly is.
Greedily ambitious–yet grossly incompetent.

I looked up to see Brandon pulling his phone from his coat’s inner pocket. He paused briefly to compose himself, then answered.
“Dad,” he said.
I couldn’t hear the words on the other end, but his face suddenly drained of color.
His voice trembled. “But it wasn’t supposed to happen this soon. It should have taken a few more days…”
A faint yell tore through the line, and Brandon lowered his head, replying faintly, “Alright, I understand. I’m on my way back.”
The call ended.
I didn’t know what it was about, but his reaction alone made every instinct in me scream to tread carefully.
Still, I couldn’t just pretend not to notice. “Did something… happen?” I asked softly.
He didn’t answer right away. His head stayed bowed for several long seconds before he slid the phone back into his pocket and turned toward me.
His expression was calm. Too calm.
So much that it was unnerving.
So when he came to sit beside me, I instinctively shifted, putting a little distance between us as my gaze followed him warily.
If he noticed, he didn’t show it.
Instead, he spoke with that same unnerving calm. “The accident cover–up has been leaked. The press has already published it.
”
“What?” My voice shot up, shrill with panic, as I almost leapt to my feet.
“Didn’t you say you could keep it under wraps until you secured your engagement with Lilith? You said that was the only way you’d escape unscathed. And now–now that it’s out early, what happens to you?”

Even if my feelings for him were fading. I still couldn’t help but worry for him.
It had became an habit

Compared to my anxiety, Brandon’s expression didn’t shift at all. His composure made me wonder if he already had a plan.
As this thought crossed my mind, he turned fully toward me, taking my hands into his.
