But then I glanced at the clock. At this hour, they should already be at work.
With that in mind, I finally swiped to answer. But I didn’t rush to speak, ready to hang up if I heard the wrong voice.
“Miss Lilith.
Relief loosened my shoulders. Not them.
My tone softened instantly. “Uncle Theo.”
“Have you settled into your new place properly? What about your meals? Are you eating well?” his questions came one after the another, his voice weighted with concern.
He made it sound as though I’d been away for years instead of two days.
But beneath his fussing, I could hear genuine care. He hadn’t asked me anything when I left yesterday—not where, not why. Yet, I knew he must have been worried deep down.
So instead of brushing him off, I answered each question patiently.
“I’m still adjusting and getting used to living alone, but it’s… peaceful. Very different from before. As for meals-” I let out a soft, playful laugh. “You really can’t stop treating me like a child, can you? Don’t worry, I’ve been eating regularly. Though…” I lowered my voice conspiratorially. “…it doesn’t compare to Aunt Martha’s cooking.”
He laughed at that, the sound warm and hearty. “Martha would be delighted to hear that.”
But soon, his laughter faded into a sigh. “I truly can’t stop worrying about you. Anyway, promise you won’t forget to look after your health since I won’t be there to keep an eye on you.”
My throat tightened. I missed him already.
Still, I kept my voice steady, unwilling to let him hear anything amiss. I had to put his mind at ease and not let him worry endlessly about me.
“I’ll look after myself,, Uncle Theo. So you’d better do the same–otherwise, I’ll be the one worrying from here.”

“Alright, that’s a promise.” he said, affection coloring every word. “But remember, if you ever need anything–anything at all–you reach out to me, okay?”
“I understand.” I whispered. “Thank you.”
Silence stretched between us–the kind that carried more than words could convey–before he cleared his throat. “Oh, I almost forgot the reason I called. That girl–Claire Brooks–she’s here. She says you and she had a deal about her working as your assistant for a month. She can’t reach you and wants to know when she should begin.”
He hesitated. “Is that true?”
My brows lifted.
Claire, volunteering to play the obedient sidekick? Something about that smelled fishy.
Uncle Theo’s voice broke into my thoughts. “She wants to speak with you. Should I hand her the phone?”
I considered hanging up. The last thing I wanted was to waste my energy listening to her little performances, especially now that I knew her downfall wasn’t far off.
However…
She’d specifically called through Uncle Theo.
No doubt because Mom had told her he was the only one who could reach me, especially since I’d now blocked unknown callers from reaching my phone.
If I ignored her now, she’d definitely keep bothering him until she got what she wanted.
I couldn’t let that happen.
My eyes narrowed. “Give it to her. I’ll hear what she has to say.
“Alright,” he said, and the line went silent for a beat.
Then came her voice, bright and fake as ever.
“Lily… Lilith. I heard you… moved out?”
”
I leaned back against the sofa, stretching my legs onto the coffee table. “Mm.”
“Is it… because of me?” she blurted out next.
