My lips curled faintly.
I just couldn’t be sure whether it was a personal errand, or one my mom sent her on.
Regardless-
“And why would I do that?” I asked, bored.
She sounded genuinely surprised. “Didn’t Uncle Theo tell you? You wanted me to be your assistant in order for you to forgive me, remember? How can I do that if I can’t even reach you?”
On the surface, it was plausible enough, after all, I knew her real goal was to leech my luck by keeping my emotions toward her stable.
But somehow, I was certain something was off.
Claire Brooks was prideful. That I knew very well.
So desperate or not, she wouldn’t willingly lower herself like this. It was more likely she’d look for a crack, some sneaky workaround to achieve the same goal.
Much like the way she pretended to apologize without ever actually saying the words.
My eyes glinted with cold mischief. “Well, I do appreciate your… enthusiasm. But I’ll have to decline since I’m not fond of strangers wandering into my home.”
“Still, if you truly want to fulfill our deal, I could consider unblocking your number. We can communicate by phone then.”
I let the silence stretch, then added smoothly, “What do you think?”
LILITH
A moment later, Claire’s voice came through.
“That’s indeed a good idea. But…”
Her tone dropped. “…I have something to tell you in person. It’s not something I can say fully on the phone.”

Chapter 84
Did I believe her? No.
Did I think she was baiting me? Absolutely
Still, curiosity tugged at me. Why was she so desperate to get me to meet her?
But one thing was certain–whatever it was, it couldn’t be good.
So I replied lightly, “Oh, really. But what can I do? I’ll have to pass on this one.”

“You must have heard already,” I sighed dramatically, “my accounts and cards have been frozen. I‘ m currently stuck at home and can’t go anywhere. I don’t even have enough for a cab.”
“That’s no issue,” she said in a brisk tone. “Like I said earlier, send me your address and I’ll come pick you up-” She broke off mid–sentence, her tone shifting as she recalled my refusal. “But then,
you said I’m not welcome…
”
“Then, what about this instead? You can open a quick digital wallet, and I’ll send you cash for a cab. That way you can come here.”
I frowned. Claire, stingy as she was, was offering me money?
For her to bear parting with her cash just to lure me out… made her offer even more suspicious.
“I’ll pass,” I declined coolly. “I don’t like owing people favors.‘
”
After that, she didn’t say anything for a while, so I figured she’d gotten my message loud and
clear.
But just as I was about to hang up, her voice cut in again, sharper this time.
“What if this is about Dean Callahan? You care about him, don’t you?”
My stomach tightened, so did my grip on the phone.
“What do you mean? What does Dean have to do with this?”
Claire chuckled darkly. “So you do care. Seems like Brandon and I weren’t the only ones having an affair, hmm?”
I ignored her jab, my voice hardening. “Why did you mention Dean?”
Perhaps realizing I was seconds away from losing my patience with her, she switched tactics and softened her tone.

“He’s in danger. You know how Brandon is–he can’t stand when things don’t go his way. And now, he’s convinced Dean is the reason for it.”
